KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Fast bowler Justin Greaves captured his maiden first class five-wicket haul and captain Kraigg Brathwaite followed up with an unbeaten half-century, to put Barbados Pride on top on day one of their eighth round clash with Jamaica Scorpions on Friday.
Opting to bat first at Sabina Park, Scorpions crashed from 135 for three to 177 all out, losing their last seven wickets for 42 runs in a dramatic slide.
Greaves was the chief wrecker with five for 41 while Test left-arm spinner Jomal Warrican supported with two for 43.
Andre McCarthy top-scored with 52, Shacaya Thomas weighed in with exactly 50 but they were the only two batsmen to pass 20.
In reply, Pride finished the day on 103 for three with Brathwaite unbeaten on 66.
He put on 46 for the first wicket with the left-handed Omar Phillips who made 11, before left-arm spinner Nikita Miller intervened to snatch three for 22, and reduce the innings to 71 for three.
Phillips shouldered arms and was bowled in the 11th over of the innings, another left-hander Jonathan Carter was trapped lbw on the backfoot for six while Brooks had his stumps rattled for three.
Brathwaite and Roston Chase, unbeaten on nine at the end, have so far added 32 for the fourth wicket to stabilise the innings.
Right-hander Brathwaite has faced 119 balls in 2-1/2 hours and counted 11 fours.
Earlier, Scorpions wasted a strong position and produced yet another poor batting display.
Pride struck early when fast bowler Miguel Cummins had captain John Campbell caught at third slip by Brooks for four in the morning’s fifth over at 17 for one.
Greaves then grabbed his first when he had fellow Barbadian Kirk Edwards caught and bowled, also for four, at 41 for two.
McCarthy and Thomas combined to prop up the innings in a 52-run stand. McCarthy faced 82 balls in just over 1-3/4 hours at the crease and counted six fours and a six while opener Thomas hammered seven fours and a six off 76 deliveries.
With lunch approaching, Thomas clipped a leg-side catch to wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich off part-time off-spinner Chase, leaving Scorpions on 113 for three at the break.
After the break, McCarthy and Brandon King (19) extended their fourth wicket stand to 42 but once they were separated, the innings declined rapidly.
