LONDON, CMC – Ex-West Indies fast bowler Tino Best bowled Hampshire to victory but Leeward Islands batsman Chesney Hughes suffered another failure with the bat as Derbyshire lost on the final day of the latest round of English County Championship games here Wednesday.

Right-armer Best snapped up four for 47 as Nottinghamshire, chasing 305 for victory at The Rose Bowl, were dismissed for 235 in their second innings – handing Hampshire victory by 69 runs.

The hosts began the day on 189 for eight in their second innings and added 34 runs in eight overs before declaring their innings on 223 for nine.

England left-arm seamer Harry Gurney finished with five for 75.

Best then produced two key strikes when he removed opener Jake Libby for four to a catch at the wicket and then trapped Michael Lumb lbw for nine, as Notts slumped to 21 for two in the ninth over of the innings.

Zimbabwe’s Brendan Taylor top-scored with 71 and Samit Patel gathered 65, in 108-run, fifth wicket stand which propped up the innings.

Nineteen-year-old leg-spinner Mason Crane claimed both and in between, Best accounted for Daniel Christian who was waging a fightback with 31 off 55 deliveries, as Notts slumped again.

The 34-year-old Best then knocked over Brett Hutton without scoring to put Hampshire on the verge of victory.

Best, who picked up two wickets in the first innings, has now taken 12 wickets in three games, since replacing injured fellow Barbados and Windies speedster, Fidel Edwards.

In Derby, left-hander Hughes was one of three wickets to tumble late on Tuesday’s penultimate day as Derbyshire ended on nine for three in their second innings.

And they were dismissed for a dismal 94 on Wednesday, leaving Kent with an uncomplicated target of 175 which they easily reached to pull off a seven-wicket win.

Opener Daniel Bell-Drummond, a 22-year-old right-hander of Jamaican parentage, stroked an unbeaten 80 to take his tally for the season to 498 runs at an average of 83.

Hughes, who failed to score in the first innings, has amassed 570 runs at an average of 31.
