Scores of youth cricketers and dozens of senior players converged at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, next to Ellerslie School in Black Rock, St Michael yesterday for the funeral service of Victor Springer, father of Barbados and West Indies Under-19 all-rounder Shamar Springer.
Present and past Combermere cricketers, headed by Barbados captain Kraigg Brathwaite and his West Indies’ teammate Jomel Warrican as well as first-class players Kevin Stoute, Kyle Mayers and Justin Greaves were among those paying their last respects.
Several work colleagues from the Transport Board, where the deceased was employed for many years as well as of the Barbados Cricket Association’s officials Stephen Leslie and Roxanne Forte, national Under-19 coach Dexter Toppin and chairman of the youth selection panel, Elvis Howard, also attended the service.
Officiating Pastor Dayle Haynes delivered the sermon while tributes were given by Shamar Springer and Felicia Sue of the Transport Board.
Dream
In his tribute, Shamar, flanked by his Combermere and Barbados Under-19 teammates Keon Harding and Nicholas Kirton, said that his father’s dream was for him to represent the West Indies and play cricket throughout the world.
To this end, Shamar, who is set to represent the Barbados Tridents in the upcoming Caribbean Premier League, promised that from here on, he would try to bring that dream to a reality and make his father proud since he knew that even though he won’t be able to support him physically anymore like he had always done all his life, he would still do so spiritually.
The interment for Springer senior, who attended most of his son’s matches in Barbados and even travelled overseas to watch him play when he represented Barbados at all levels of youth cricket, took place at the Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens.
