Barbados Cricket Association article.
Bridgetown, Barbados - It was somewhat of a CounterPoint Wanderers show on the opening day of the third Barbados Pride trial match at Weymouth today.
Slated for four days when compared with the previous two which were set for three, the batting, apart from a solid half-century from the Wanderers opener Shayne Moseley, was generally a letdown.
Left-hander Moseley made 53 in over three hours in a total of 160 for nine declared off 57 overs by Omar Phillips' X1, who won the toss.
Moseley's club-mate, leg-spinner Nikolai Charles, gave the Henderson Wallace-chaired selection panel further reasons to put him in the squad for the opening round WICB Professional Cricket League first-class match against Leeward Islands, starting November 11, by grabbing his second five-wicket haul of the trials.
Nicknamed "Scratchy", Charles took five for 41 off 15 overs, pushing his tally of wickets to 17 at 12 runs apiece in four innings.
Charles, who celebrated his 30th birthday on October 1, has also picked up 24 wickets in the current BCA Elite division Championship with three rounds of matches remaining.
After making his debut in 2009, Charles played the last of 13 first-class matches five years ago for Barbados against Combined Campuses & Colleges at 3Ws Oval but on present form, he deserves a call-up.
The Wanderers show today included fast bowling all-rounder Kevin McClean, who took three for 23 off 8.5 overs.
And among Charles' victims were Moseley and yet another Wanderers man, Kirk Edwards.
Edwards, a former Barbados captain and West Indies batsman, added 42 in 17.4 overs for the second wicket with Moseley - the best partnership of the innings - before he was bowled for 21, which came in 84 minutes off 57 balls and did not include a boundary.
McClean had accounted for the first scalp, left-hander Phillips, who was also bowled for a brisk 23 off 21 balls containing three boundaries.
Charles also removed yet another left-hander, Jonathan Carter (six), who will miss the early PCL matches because of his inclusion in the West Indies squad for the triangular One-Day International series with Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka in Zimbabwe.
Moseley was fourth out. He batted for 190 minutes, faced 122 balls and struck seven fours and one six.
Kevin Stoute's X1 will resume 57 for two off 23 overs with Aaron Jones, used an opener, on 20 and Ryan Wiggins on eight.
Shane Parris fell for a 'duck' to Grenadian pacer Preston McSween and Stoute was removed by fast bowler Keon Harding for 19.
Ironically, though Stoute and Phillips were named as captains for the first two trial matches as well, it is the first time they have played against each other.
Phillips missed the opening match at 3Ws Oval after his mother took ill, while Stoute pulled out of the second at Foursquare Oval because of a stiff neck he sustained two days earlier while attempting a sharp single during his match-winning 39 for Elite division Championship leaders ICBL Empire against BDFSP at Paragon.
That knock took Stoute to exactly 500 runs for the season, making him the first and still only batsman to reach the coveted landmark.
