GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Shiv Chanderpaul’s 72nd first class hundred helped reigning champions Guyana Jaguars fight back against arch-rivals Barbados Pride on the opening day of their day/night fourth round game in the Regional Four-Day Championship here Friday night.
The veteran left-hander gathered exactly 100, an innings that lifted the hosts to 311 out at the close at the Guyana National Stadium.
Successful former West Indies Under-19s captain, Shimron Hetmyer, stroked an entertaining 60 while Vishaul Singh weighed in with 40, Gudakesh Motie 36 not out and Raymon Reifer, 35.
Test seamer Kemar Roach continued his impressive comeback from injury with three for 47 while medium pacer Kevin Stoute (2-52) and off-spinner Roston Chase (2-74) claimed two wickets apiece.
Opting to bat, Jaguars got a solid start of 49 from Hetmyer and Rajendra Chandrika (11) to safely navigate the first hour of the evening without losing a wicket.
However, Pride got the breakthrough with the fourth delivery following the drinks break when Chandrika played back to Chase and was bowled.
Captain Leon Johnson followed cheaply for four, also lbw to Chase, but Hetmyer and Vishaul steadied the innings in a 38-run, third wicket stand.
The left-handed Hetmyer struck six fours and three sixes in an enterprising 77-ball knock before holing out in the deep off part-time seamer Jonathan Carter on the stroke of the first interval.
Vishaul then added a further 39 for the fourth wicket with Chanderpaul before falling lbw to Stoute, after striking six fours off 86 balls in just over an hour-and-a-half at the crease.
When all-rounder Chris Barnwell perished cheaply for four, Jaguars were stumbling at 148 for five but Chanderpaul and Barbadian all-rounder Raymon Reifer bolstered the innings in an excellent 85-run, sixth wicket partnership which carried the hosts to the second interval on 194 for five.
All told, Chanderpaul faced 141 balls in just over four hours at the crease and stroked 14 fours while Reifer counted seven boundaries in a breezy 60-ball knock.
Carter broke the stand when he had Reifer caught at mid-on off a leading edge at 233 for six and the next two wickets fell for the addition of a single run, to leave Jaguars struggling on 234 for eight.
However, Chanderpaul once again showed his class, combining in a 70-run, ninth wicket stand with Motie to frustrate Pride.
