Cummins stars but Volcanoes fight back

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Fast bowler Miguel Cummins took his 100th first-class wicket in a superb five-wicket burst but Andre Fletcher countered with an entertaining half-century to lead a Windward Islands Volcanoes fightback on the on the opening day of the sixth round match against Barbados Pride here Friday.

The Barbados Pride speedster took five for 47 as Windward Islands Volcanoes, opting to bat first at Kensington Oval, were dismissed for 250 on a slow pitch which proved helpful to fast bowlers in the morning but offered some turn for the spinners as the day progressed.

With Cummins grabbing the first three wickets to fall, Volcanoes were tumbling at 46 for four in the second hour of the morning when Fletcher arrived to stroke a handsome 84 and rescue the innings.

He was joined by Kavem Hodge who gathered 53, Shane Shillingford who got a breezy 28 and Keddy Lesporis who chipped in with 22.

Left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn supported Cummins well with three for 65.

It was a bittersweet day for the 25-year-old Cummins, however, as he later experienced pain in his right hamstring from what appeared to be severe cramp, as he ran up to bowl the second ball of his 16th over from the Joel Garner End.

He later returned to take his place in the attack but could only manage two deliveries before he left the field a second time clutching his right leg again.

It was a tough day for the Bajan bowlers as Test pacer Kemar Roach also pulled up in the first session after sending down just 19 balls. He left the field and never returned.

Nevertheless, Pride started well with Cummins doing the early damage. He had Tyrone Theophile caught at second slip by Ashley Nurse for seven in the day’s fifth over with the score on 12 before removing Johnson Charles with a lifting delivery, taken at third slip by substitute Jonathan Carter with the score on 29 for two.

Cummins then sent back Sunil Ambris without scoring off the very next delivery, caught at forward short-leg by Kyle Corbin.

When Keddy Lesporis was adjudged to have handled the ball as he attempted to use his hand to prevent a delivery from Benn from hitting the stumps, Volcanoes were in strife.

However, an enterprising 127-run, fifth wicket stand between Fletcher and Hodge helped the visitors to recover.

Fletcher stroked 16 boundaries in an innings lasting 144 balls in just under three hours at the crease while Hodge notched his maiden first class half-century, facing 185 balls in a knock spanning nearly 3-3/4 hours and counting five fours.

The partnership was broken about 25 minutes before tea when Fletcher fell to a leg-side trap, which was well set by skipper Kraigg Braithwaite for Cummins. After sending down a few wayward chest-high deliveries, Brathwaite moved the short-leg fielder deeper.

Cummins then served up a full delivery on the legs and Fletcher clipped it straight into Corbin’s hands close in.

Hodge, unbeaten on 44 at the break, eventually perished to a catch at leg slip by Carter, sweeping at off-spinner Nurse at 198 for seven, after captain Liam Sebastien had been caught at gully by Benn off Cummins for four in the sixth over after tea.

Shillingford then threw his bat, smashing two fours and three sixes in a 48-ball cameo but was one of the three last wickets of the innings which to fell to Benn.

Impressive all-rounder Harding lands Haynes grant

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – West Under-19 reserve Keon Harding was on Wednesday confirmed as the winner of the Desmond Haynes Scholarship for sporting and academic excellence.

The fast bowling all-rounder from Barbados was among the list of players shortlisted for the ICC Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh, but failed to make the final 15.

West Indies on Thursday beat Bangladesh to qualify for the final against India on Sunday.

Haynes, the legendary Barbados and West Indies opening batsman and captain, praised Harding for his commitment to cricket as well his studies.

“In my life I had a lot of help from a lot of people. My job is to help others and encourage the young people to go pursue their dreams and excel in their chosen field,” Haynes told a media briefing here.

“In my life I got a lot of help and decided to start the Desmond Haynes Foundation, where I looked to raise some money to help young cricketers to further their education because I want them to have that mix with education and sport.

“Here is a young man who is very highly regarded among people in the cricketing circles. He is known as one of the hardest working young cricketers, with his commitment to fitness and improving his skills.”

Haynes added: “We are happy to award Keon the Desmond Haynes Scholarship and we know he will continue to make us proud. He is a good cricketer, he has also excelled in football and track and field at Combermere School.

“He is also pursuing his degree at Cave Hill (University of the West Indies) and we are delighted he is also doing very well in his studies.”

Haynes is ranked among the greatest opening batsman of all time. He played 116 Test matches and made 7487 runs including 18 centuries. He was a member of the West Indies World Cup winning team in 1979 and the all-time great squad in the 1970s and 80s.

He shared the game’s most successful opening partnership with Gordon Greenidge, which lasted for over a decade.

“The Desmond Haynes Scholarship is open to boys and girls who are showing progress and we believe we can assist. At this stage we offer one scholarship per year but we are hoping to offer more in the future,” Haynes said.

“As a young man growing up I always wanted to play cricket for the West Indies … I achieved that. But back in those days people had to choose between sport and academics. We want to make sure you can do both – sports and studies – and we are here to help in everywhere we can.”

To help with fundraising, the Desmond Haynes Foundation will host a celebrity golf event on February 21 at the Royal Westmoreland Golf Course on Barbados’ west coast.

Several former cricketers including Sir Garfield Sobers are expected to participate.

In previous years, former England captain Mike Gatting and Ryder Cup player Ian Woosnam were involved in the event.

Brathwaite ton puts Pride in control

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – A high-quality century by captain Kraigg Brathwaite steered Barbados Pride into a powerful position against Windward Islands Volcanoes on the second day of their sixth round match here Saturday.

The right-handed Test opener carved out 117 – his 15th first class century – in an excellent show of classy stroke-play and concentration, as the home side ended on 272 for two on a placid surface at Kensington Oval.

They take a small first innings lead of 22 into Sunday’s third day, after dismissing the visitors for 250 on the opening day.

Brathwaite shared a magnificent 168-run, second wicket partnership with West Indies teammate Shai Hope, who closed on a superb 98 not out.

They came together when Kyle Corbin, who made 38 and put on 93 for the first wicket with Brathwaite, attempted a sweep but got an inside edge and was snapped up behind by Andre fletcher off off-spinner and captain Liam Sebastien on the stroke of lunch.

The right-handed Corbin struck three fours and two sixes off 83 balls in nearly two hours at the crease.

Brathwaite and Hope then dominated the next two sessions, allowing Pride to take control of the encounter.

The 23-year-old Brathwaite counted eight fours and a huge six over long-on off spinner Shane Shillingford, while facing 271 balls in a shade over 5-3/4 hours at the crease. Hope, also a right-hander, stroked eight fours off 187 deliveries in an innings lasting just over four hours.

The highlight of Hope’s innings was his dominance against spin and his ability to score off the slow bowlers and manipulate the field.

For Brathwaite, it was his seventh century at regional level and he reached 3 000 runs for Barbados and 6,000 overall in his career. He raised his landmark late in day with a quick single into the off-side.

Brathwaite survived a tough chance when he was dropped by Fletcher on 109, looking to cut.

He eventually fell late in the day to a lazy stroke off part-time medium-pacer Johnson Charles, caught at the wicket as he tried to run a ball to third man.

Volcanoes hanging on after Hope century

$

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Test batsman Shai Hope showcased his immense batting capabilities with a flawless century as Barbados Pride closed in on victory against Windward Islands Volcanoes on the third day of the sixth round match here Sunday.

The polished right-hander struck 162 – his third first class century – to power the hosts to 450 for five declared and a healthy first innings lead of 200 runs at Kensington Oval.

Part-time off-spinner Roston Chase then grabbed three for 19 and left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn, two for 38, to leave Volcanoes in trouble at 134 for seven – a deficit of 66 runs going into Monday’s final day.

Keddy Lesporis top-scored with 29 while Johnson Charles and Andre Fletcher both got 25 but the visitors lost wickets steadily to leave themselves in danger of defeat.

The headlines belonged to Hope, however. Starting the day on 98, he reached triple figures in the second over of the morning off 191 balls with eight fours.

The 22-year-old, who has played six Test matches as a top order batsman with limited success, used the opportunity to remind the West Indies selectors of his abilities.

Overall, he faced 276 balls and hit 17 boundaries in a shade under 6-½ hours. The knock was his second century against Volcanoes following his career-best 211 at the same venue last season.

Hope added 52 for the third wicket with Shamarh Brooks (18) and 40 for the fourth wicket with Carlos Brathwaite (27). He eventually fell to a catch behind off Shane Shilingford in the second session to give Andre Fletcher his fourth dismissal of the innings.

The home side stretched their innings into the second session with Chase playing freely for 40 not out off 64 balls and keeper Shane Dowrich making a brisk 24 not out off 39 balls.

When the declaration came half-hour before tea, Volcanoes then batted recklessly and at one stage the innings looked unlikely to last the day.

It required rearguard action from tail-enders Shillingford – 17 not out in an hour off 48 balls and left-hander Kevin McClean – three not out off 35 balls, to avoid a crushing defeat.

With 26 runs on the board, opener Tyrone Theophile flashed at an out-swinger from Miguel Cummins and was taken by Dowrich and Charles was bowled between bat and pad by seamer Carlos Brathwaite, who used the new ball with Kemar Roach unavailable due to injury.

Sunil Ambris made just three before he was taken low at slip by substitute Jonathan Carter off Benn and Chase then sent back Lesporis and Kavem Hodge (0) off successive deliveries to leave Volcanoes rocking on 80 for five.

Lesporis was snapped up by Benn at slip and Hodge missed a full delivery and was comprehensively bowled.

Chase’s third wicket came when Andre Fletcher was caught behind as he skied a wild swing which was aimed towards midwicket.

Second-placed Barbados Pride face unbeaten leaders and reigning champions Guyana Jaguars at Kensington Oval in the oldest rivalry of the regional first-class game in the feature match of the round.

At the same time, R4Day matches return to the Addelita Cancryn Junior High School in the United States Virgin Islands of St. Thomas after seven years, when buoyant, bottom-placed hosts Leeward Islands Hurricanes meet fifth-placed visitors Windward Islands Volcanoes.

In the other match of the round, bragging rights will be up for grabs, when third-placed Jamaica Scorpions tackle fourth-placed Trinidad & Tobago Red Force in a middle-of-the-table battle at Sabina Park.

In Bridgetown, Barbados: The contest between the Pride and Jaguars could play a decisive role in the destination of the Headley/Weekes Trophy, symbol of R4Day supremacy, at the end of this season.

The Jaguars, holding a 19-point advantage on their hosts, may choose discretion as the best part of valour, as they look to extend their lead in the tournament – but the Pride will have to opt for the “no guts, no glory” approach to slow down the leaders.

Both teams enter the contest in a rich vein of confidence, following solid victories in the previous round, when the Pride iced the Volcanoes, and the Jaguars stopped the Red Force.

When the two sides met earlier in the season, the Jaguars rolled over a depleted Pride side in the third round on home soil at the Guyana National Stadium.

This should be enough motivation for the home team, as they look to return the favour in a bid to catch the leaders, prevent them from claiming their seventh straight win and, more importantly, run away with the title for the second straight season.

The Pride however, can’t be too confident about achieving this result. In the corresponding fixture last season, they suffered a four-wicket defeat, as the Jags chased down a target of 333 over the last day and a session.

The Jaguars are however, without the two main protagonists of that victory – Narsingh Deonarine is now a member of the Red Force and Shivnarine Chanderpaul is away on personal business.

The Jags’ prospects are also fortified with the knowledge that they are unaffected by the absence of key players, due to the West Indies’ participation in the upcoming World Twenty20 Tournament in India, unlike their opponents.

The visitors have enough proven match-winners to make things difficult for the Pride, whose squad has been weakened by the departure of Sulieman Benn, Carlos Brathwaite and Ashley Nurse to Dubai and India with the Windies T20 squad, as well as a hamstring injury to West Indies fast bowler Kemar Roach.

They have been replaced by rookie all-rounder Justin Greaves, uncapped fast bowler Keon Harding, a former Barbados Under-19, along with experienced opener Omar Phillips and Antiguan leg-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr, looking to make his first appearance for the Pride in any format this season.

In Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas: A rock-hard pitch and big crowd are expected to greet the Hurricanes and Volcanoes, as local organisers were putting the finishing touches on preparations.

The ACJHS ground previously staged six R4Day matches between 2003 and 2009 and was brought back onto the list of approved venues to stage first-class matches, following a series of inspections of the venue by a joint team from the WICB and West Indies Players’ Association last year.

The ground is hemmed between the picturesque Crown Bay at the southern end with a view of Water Island and Veterans Drive, a major thoroughfare into the city centre, on the northern end. The ACJHS school buildings are located on the eastern side, and docks and warehouses on the western side.

It however, has not been a happy hunting ground for the home team, as they have lost all but once here. Fortunately, the solitary victory was against their opponents for this weekend – and was the last match played here.

Hurricanes and Volcanoes find themselves struck virtually in the same position they did at the same stage last season, and will be yearning for more consistency and a big haul of points to give them a boost in the confidence, if not in the standings.

The last 11 matches between the two sides have each produced a winner, but the Volcanoes comfortably won a low-scoring affair between the two sides earlier in the season.

Hurricanes enter the match in a robust frame-of-mind following a victory over the Scorpions in the previous round, but the Volcanoes will have to pick themselves up after the Pride rolled them.

The home team has retained their squad from last weekend, but the Volcanoes will have to try to recover without the World T20-bound duo of Johnson Charles and Andre Fletcher, while fast bowler Mervin Matthew did not make the trip, due to travel complications.

In Kingston, Jamaica: Scorpions and Red Force, two teams that started the season promising much will be looking to deliver.

Scorpions will be going all out to keep the top two within reach, if at all possible, and Red Force will look to shut the gap between themselves and the top three.

Both teams suffered setbacks in the previous round, when they were beaten by the Hurricanes and Jaguars respectively, but the home team won the contest between the two sides earlier in the season on the road.

They will hope familiar conditions will breed success, but the Red Force, whose squad is unchanged, will want the clichéd lightning to strike twice and last year’s result in the corresponding fixture will repeat itself – and they could walk away with victory.

In a significant move ahead of the match, the Scorpions have relieved Paul Palmer Jr of the captaincy and his place due to poor form with fellow opener John Campbell taking over and Barbadian import Kirk Edwards elevated position of vice-captain.

Also, the experienced duo of Carlton Baugh Jr and Dave Bernard Jr has made way for Chadwick Walton and rookie Nicholson Gordon in other changes to the Scorpions’ squad.

Stoute shines but Jaguars limit Pride

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – All-rounder Kevin Stoute and Shamarh Brooks gathered half-centuries but leaders Guyana Jaguars produced a steady bowling performance to limit Barbados Pride on the opening day of their seventh round clash here Friday.

Opting to bat first, Pride lost opener Kyle Corbin without scoring in the second over of the morning without a run on the board but recovered well to be dismissed for 274 at Kensington Oval.

Stoute, batting at number eight, stroked an unbeaten 56 while Brooks also got 56 up the order. Captain and opener Kraigg Brathwaited scored 40 while left-hander Jonathan Carter weighed in with 38.

Jaguars were persistent, however, with fast bowler Keon Joseph picking up three for 49 and left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul (2-43), left-arm seamer Ramon Reifer (2-49) and Test leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo (2-72) all supporting with two wickets each.

Jaguars drew first blood in the top of the table clash when Joseph bowled Corbin off the inside edge with his fifth delivery of his opening spell.

Pride fought back with a string of small partnerships as they headed into the lunch interval on 78 for two.

Brathwaite and West Indies teammate Shai Hope, who scored 27, added 46 for the second wicket while Hope and Brooks put on a further 32 runs for the third wicket, to be together at the break.

The right-handed Brathwaite carved out a busy innings off just 51 deliveries with seven fours before edging a cut at fellow Barbadian Reifer and being taken behind by Anthony Bramble at 46 for two, in the second over following the first water break.

Hope failed to add to his lunch time score, bowled first ball after lunch by a full length delivery from Permaul but Pride benefitted from a 55-run, fourth wicket stand between Brooks and Roston Chase (17).

The right-handed Brooks faced 122 balls in 2-3/4 hours and counted seven fours and a six while Chase supported with a 61-ball knock that included a single boundary.

With tea beckoning, Chase tried to go over the top with Permaul but only succeeded in finding Assad Fudadin at cover. His dismissal sparked a slide as Pride lost three wickets for 21 runs.

Wicketkeeker Shane Dowrich edged a drive at Bishoo to captain Leon Johnson at slip for five and Brooks missed a drive and was bowled by Bishoo, leaving the hosts on 152 for five at tea.

Stoute then anchored two key partnerships with an innings that lasted 99 balls in just under 2-1/2 hours and included five fours and a six.

He posted 65 for the seventh wicket with Carter who hit six fours in a 62-ball knock, before adding a further 47 for the eighth wicket with Justin Greaves who made 19 from 41 deliveries.

Carter was caught at the wicket off Joseph and once  Greaves was taken at forward short leg by Tagenarine Chanderpaul off the same bowler, Pride lost their last three wickets for eight runs.

Roach, Warrican almost back to fitness

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - There is optimism of injured Barbados Pride and West Indies Test bowlers Kemar Roach and Jomel Warrican returning to the first-class arena soon.

Experienced pacer Roach pulled up with a hamstring complaint after bowling only 3.1 overs on the opening day of the sixth round WICB PCL four-day match against Windward Islands Volcanoes at Kensington Oval on February 12, while left-arm spinner Warrican, who only made his international debut four months ago, has been sidelined with a finger ailment after playing in the NAGICO Super50 Championship in Trinidad & Tobago last month.

But in giving an update on both players, chairman of the Barbados Pride selectors Henderson Wallace conceded that he was somewhat surprised by the swift progress, which the 27-year-old Roach was making for what was described as a Grade 1 tear of the right hamstring.

"What was very disappointing for myself, from the work that Kemar had been putting in, in the nets and certainly leading up to that last round game, we were all very excited about seeing what he was really going to produce," Wallace said in an exclusive interview on Mid Wicket, The Real Cricket Show, on the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (100.7 FM) on Tuesday night.

"He was really hitting the straps. He had done some slight remodelling with Roddy Estwick (Barbados Pride fast bowling consultant) and the ball appeared to be coming out nicely in the nets so we were really excited to see what was going to come from Kemar in that match against the Windward Islands.

"We were very disappointed that he wasn't able to actually stay on the pitch. It was very unfortunate but these things happen in sport."

Asked how soon he expected Roach to return to the middle, Wallace responded: "You know the medical team are always very reluctant to pin down a time, but the report I got was that he was making excellent progress and to hear the word 'excellent' is very encouraging. We are being told that he is on the right path so we expect him back on the pitch sooner rather than later."

Roach, himself, was very upbeat as he he took a jog around the field at Kensington Oval on Friday - the opening day of the top-of-the-table clash between Barbados Pride and defending champions and front-runners Guyana Jaguars.

"In about a week so or, I should be okay," he told BCAcricket.org shortly after "hailing up" the Guyana players and exchanging a handshake with bearded left-handed batsman Assad Fudadin, whose last of three Tests was in a winning cause by five wickets against New Zealand in Jamaica four years ago when Roach was also in the side.

In relation to the 23-year-old Warrican, Wallace reckoned proper rest was needed, especially since the injury was on his spinning finger.

"Just remember in professional sport now, it is very unlikely you are going to play injury-free. You always have a niggle of some sorts. Again It comes back to the point that we mentioned earlier that the medical team sometimes have to depend on the honesty and the integrity of the player and make their decision based on medical evidence along with what is coming from the player," Wallace said.

"In the NAGICO, Jomel Warrican was able to play with the discomfort. It didn't appear to affect him too much and then it came to a time now where there was some information and stuff on the finger with the ligaments and we felt that he should give it every possible opportunity to heal properly.

"It's on his spinning finger and as you know these spinners bowl a lot of overs. We felt that if he rushed back there was a likelihood that the whole trauma of trying to grip that ball with that index finger could more or less affect the full recovery.

"And what I said to Jomel Warrican coming from the selection panel.. that you don't have to rush back to prove anything. You want to make sure that you give it the best possible opportunity to recover fully so that when you come back on the pitch you are able to execute and perform to the best of your ability. Not to be performing at 60 or 65 percent because we are not at that desperate stage.

"I said, 'we have resources' so we want that when he comes back on the stage that Jomel Warrican is at his best."

Roach is a veteran of 37 Tests since his debut against Bangladesh in the Caribbean in 2009. He has 122 wickets at 30.23 runs apiece.

In four Tests, Warrican has 11 wickets at an average of 46.27. He bowled 45 overs on his debut against Sri Lanka in late October and did the brunt of the bowling in the three-Test series against Australia "Down Under", reeling off 77 overs.

Then in the NAGICO Super50, Warrican bowled 45 overs in five matches. Informed sources said at the time, it was felt he should take a rest to have the injury healed properly and he was not chosen for the re-start of the 2015-16 first-class Championship after playing two matches in the first phase.

Jaguars under pressure as Pride lead

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Barbados Pride took a giant step towards dealing leaders Guyana Jaguars their first defeat of the Regional first class season when they grabbed an 84-run first innings lead on the second day of the seventh round contest here Saturday.

Part-time off-spinner Roston Chase grabbed five for 27 as Jaguars, replying to Pride’s 274, were dismissed for a disappointing 190 in their first innings, half-hour after tea at Kensington Oval.

Captain Leon Johnson top-scored with 40, Tagenarine Chanderpaul made 31 while Raymon Reifer got 36 and tail-ender Veerasammy Sammy Permaul weighed in with 30, but Jaguars lost their last five wickets for 57 runs.

Fast bowler Miguel Cummins supported with two for 51.

At the close, Pride had reached 71 for one – an overall lead of 155 runs heading into Sunday’s penultimate day.

Opener Kyle Corbin was unbeaten on 28 and put on 48 for the first wicket with captain Kraigg Brathwaite who struck 33 off 40 balls with three fours.

Brathwaite was caught at slip by Johnson off left-arm spinner Permaul.

Starting their innings on Saturday, Jaguar uncharacteristically lost wickets in clusters, leaving them to stumble through the innings.

They were tottering at 11 for two inside the first half hour when Cummins had Test batsman Rajindra Chandrika caught at second slip by Jonathan Carter for seven and Assad Fudadin was run out without scoring in the following over, without any addition to the total.

Left-handers Johnson and Chanderpaul steadied the innings with a third wicket stand of 62, a partnership which levelled the contest heading towards lunch.

Johnson faced 76 deliveries and struck seven fours while Chanderpaul spent 70 balls and nearly two hours at the crease, and counted four fours.

In the third over before lunch, Chase got the breakthrough when he had Chanderpaul taken close-in by substitute Omar Phillips at 76 for three.

On 81 for three at lunch, Jaguars lost two more wickets in the first 15 deliveries after the break to slide to 86 for five before all-rounder Reifer anchored two stands to lift them out of trouble.

He put on 47 for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble who made 26 and a further 40 with Permaul who faced 44 balls and struck three fours.

The left-hander struck three fours and a six in an innings lasting 86 balls and just over an hour-and-a-half.

Bramble was taken at silly point by Phillips off leg-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr but Reifer’s dismissal – caught at slip by Carter off Chase – proved crucial as it triggered a final slide from which Jaguars never recovered.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Test batsman Shai Hope and left-hander Jonathan Carter both gathered attractive unbeaten hundreds to power Barbados Pride into a match-winning position against leaders Guyana Jaguars here Sunday.

The right-handed Hope struck 114 not out while Carter finished on exactly 100 not out as Pride stormed to 320 for four declared in their second innings on the penultimate day of the seventh round encounter at Kensington Oval.

Set an improbable 405 for victory, Jaguars were making a fist of it heading into Monday’s final day, however, finishing on 52 without loss – still 353 runs adrift of what would be a remarkable run chase.

Test opener Rajindra Chandrika was unbeaten on 28 and was partnered by Tagenarine Chanderpaul on 23.

The day belonged to Pride, in particular, Hope and Carter who dominated the Jaguars’ much vaunted spin attack, to put the hosts in control of the contest.

Hope faced 225 balls in a shade over 5-1/2 hours at the crease and counted six fours while Carter was the aggressor, hammering eight fours and three sixes in an innings requiring only 104 deliveries.

For Hope, it was his fourth first class hundred and second triple figure score in as many games following his 162 against Windward Islands Volcanoes in the last round.

Carter, meanwhile, collected his third first class hundred and his first of the season.

The pair put on 162 in an unbroken fifth wicket stand which steadied the innings after Pride had lost two quick wickets for 16 runs to slip to 158 for four, in the first hour after lunch.

Resuming the day on 71 for one, Pride lost opener Kyle Corbin after he had added just nine to his overnight 28, caught by Leon Johnson at slip off left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul at 96 for two.

Hope, unbeaten on nine at the start, then put on 46 for the third wicket with Shamarh Brooks whose 26 came from 55 balls and included three fours.

Brooks perished in the fifth over after lunch, caught at slip by Johnson off pacer Keon Joseph and Roston Chase lasted just 11 balls before he edged a drive to Assad Fudadin at second slip, also off Joseph.

The 24-year-old Joseph was impressive in claiming two for 35 while Permaul finished with two for 108.

Barbados Today article.

It was a proud moment for teenager Shian Brathwaite who made his umpiring debut recently when Wanderers and Pickwick juniors played in the ongoing Barbados Cricket Supplies-sponsored Barbados Cricket Association’s Under-13 Cricket Competition.

Perhaps one of the youngest if not the youngest umpire in Barbados at age 16, Brathwaite told Barbados TODAY he was hoping for a call after passing the umpires course last year and when he finally got the call to officiate his first match he became a bit anxious but was grateful for the opportunity.

“From when I was younger I always fancy being an umpire. I just like doing everything an umpire has to do. So when I got older I asked my coach Trevor Alleyne if I could umpire and he advised me to do it and so far I am loving it,” he said.

A happy-looking Brathwaite graced Foursquare Oval cricket ground in St Phillip around noon in his capacity as a umpire beside the owner of Barbados Cricket Suplies Leslie Reifer who is also a First Class umpire at the regional level.

The fifth-form Combermere student explained he felt a bit nervous during his first over but became more relaxed thanks to words of encouragement from Reifer who he looks up to and with whom he was pleased to umpire.

“He told me not to worry about anything, don’t hustle and just enjoy myself.

“It was a pleasure to walk out on to the field with Mr Reifer seeing him on television umpiring first class games made me happy to be officiating my first game with him. I also look up to him because like myself he did the (umpires) course young and therefore we have something in common,” said the former Hilda Skeene pupil.

It seems umpiring isn’t the only thing Brathwaite has his eyes set on. He told Barbados TODAY of his intention to one day represent West Indies as an opening batsman.

Currently a member of the Barbados under-17 cricket team, Brathwaite revealed that sometime this year he will make his debut for Wanderers, a club that has some West Indies players in the line-up including captain Jason Holder.

The talented right handed opener who already has nine centuries in his young career with four of those being for Combermere, will join his uncle Shawn Armstrong at Wanderers.

“My intention is to make the Barbados senior team at age eighteen or nineteen and I am working towards that. Cricket is my main focus. I am just doing umpiring in my free time and it actually helps me with my cricket in terms of knowing the rules,” said Brathwaite, who once captained Combermere’s under-13 and 15 teams.

The young lad from Bayfield, St Phillip said he did not intend to lose sight of his goals and would continue to chart his course and hopefully one day join an elite list of international cricketers from his school such as the great Sir Wesley Hall, current West Indies Test vice-captain and opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite along with all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite and many others.
