Kaieteur News article.

Saturday during the Tea break of the seventh round PCL game between the Guyana Jaguars and the Barbados Pride at the Kensington Oval, the Managers of both teams presented the Little Pink Gift Foundation with a team shirt with autographs of every team member from both sides.

Little Pink Gift Foundation was established in 2010 by Breast Cancer survivor Lynda Lewis and provides financial assistance to Barbadian Citizens for their diagnosis and treatment for Breast Cancer.

Although rare, men too can get Breast Cancer. On Wednesday the Barbados team along with several supporters participated in a pink parade to raise Cancer awareness on the 166 square Mile Island and to help raise funds for the Foundation. The venture was initiated by Barbados and West Indies all rounder Carlos Braithwaite who leaves for the t20 World Cup.

Jaguars Manager Rayon Griffith and his Bajan counterpart Wendell Coppin presented the cricket shirt to Mrs. Lewis, while Braithwaite presented the funds raised by the Bajan team. Mrs. Lewis thanked the cricketers for their thoughtful gesture and the Barbados public for their support and informed that a group of Breast Cancer survivors were in the 3Ws Stand watching the cricket.

She was also introduced the Guyanese cricket commentator and Kaieteur News Sports Journalist Sean Devers, who is in Barbados to cover the PCL match. Devers is a brain Cancer survivor. Spectators were encouraged to wear pink during the course of this game which ends today.

Reifer frustrates Pride to earn draw

$

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul and captain Leon Johnson gathered half-centuries but it was Barbadian import Raymon Reifer who frustrated Barbados Pride’s victory bid and earned a draw for Guyana Jaguars here Monday.

Resuming the final day at Kensington Oval on 52 without loss in pursuit of an improbable target of 405, Jaguars batted the entire day to finish on 252 for seven, with Chanderpaul top-scoring with 69 and Johnson getting an even 50.

Test opener Rajindra Chandrika chipped in with 49 to ensure Jaguars cruised at 163 for two at one stage.

However, part-time off-spinner Roston Chase, who claimed five for 77 to end with a ten-wicket match haul, triggered a slide to leave Jaguars battling to save the game at 217 for six.

Reifer, in his second season with the Georgetown-based franchise, then became the hero as he batted just under 2-1/2 hours and faced 116 balls for an unbeaten 19, to nullify Pride’s attack.

At the end, he was partnered by Devendra Bishoo who was unbeaten on seven.

A turning point late in the day came when Bishoo, then on six, was put down by Chase at 245 for seven.

Unfazed by the let-off, both batsmen batted out the remaining nine overs without giving another chance to keep Jaguars unbeaten record intact.

They picked up six points from the contest while Pride walked away with eight.

Left-handers Chanderpaul and Chandrika ensured there were no hiccups for Jaguars at the start of the day as they extended their opening stand to 92 before being separated.

While Chanderpaul faced 205 deliveries in just over 4-3/4 hours with eight fours and a six, Chandrika hit five fours and a six off 110 balls.

Chandrika fell in the second hour of the morning, well taken at short mid-wicket by Hayden Walsh off Chase and two overs later, Assad Fudadin was caught low down at slip by Jonathan Carter for two off the same bowler, as the visitors went to lunch at 130 for two.

Chanderpaul and Johnson put on 67 for the third wicket to put Jaguars in a strong position after lunch. The left-handed Johnson was aggressive, striking three fours and three sixes off 92 balls, and snatched the momentum for Jaguars.

However, the drama began when Johnson found Shai Hope at mid-wicket with a full toss from leg-spinner Walsh. His dismissal triggered a slide that saw the next five wickets tumble for 75 runs, as Pride’s scented victory.

Reifer, though, yet to score at tea with Jaguars on 197 for five, put on 27 for the sixth wicket with Anthony Bramble (19) and another 21 for the seventh wicket with Veerasammy Permaul (16), to hold up Pride’s advance.

Russell, Smith fire Islamabad to title

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, CMC - Andre Russell’s three wicket haul and  Dwayne Smith’s hostile half century fired Islamabad United to a six wicket victory over Quetta Gladiators in the finals of the inaugural Pakistan Super League here on Tuesday.

Smith struck 73 off 51 balls, 52 of which came from boundaries, to anchor an impressive run chase at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

“It was a good pitch and I said to myself just go there and back yourself,” said Smith, who was named the Man of the Match.

“ It’s a very good group and I feel at home with everyone, and from the time I came here I saw that and I knew this team was going to win the tournament”.

Smith’s fireworks came after his West Indies compatriot Russell led a bowling attack that restricted Gladiators to 174 for seven in 20 overs following half centuries from Ahmed Shehzad and Kumar Sangakkara.

Shehzad, who hit nine sixes, top scored with 64 before he was caught by Samuel Badree from a Mohammad Sami delivery while Russell removed Sangakkara for 55 which included seven sixes.

Russell, the main wicket taker for the champions, grabbed three wickets for 36 runs while Samuel Badree picked one for 38.

“Winning has been following me, I’ve won three in a row now – Big Bash, BPL and now PSL,” said Russell.

“Once you’re enjoying the game success is going to follow you. The only problem that I had, or a few others might have had, is the back-to-back games we had but we are athletes”.

During the chase, Smith was in ripping form after struggling to get the ball off the square during his 37-ball 19 in the third qualifier against Peshawar Zalmi.

He smashed fours off his second and third balls and followed with a brace of fours in the next over, off spinner Nathan McCullum.

The Barbadian opener put on a solid 85 run partnership for the second wicket with Brad Haddin, who was unbeaten on 61 off 39 balls.

President: Franchises need to go further

Trinidad Guardian article.

President of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), Dave Cameron is calling on the regional governments to assist the board in developing academies to ensure the future is good for West Indian cricket.

While members of CARICOM have stated that they would like to see the current WICB dissolved, the president is saying that they have a plan for the development of West Indies cricket which is working but they need  financial support from the regional governments to take things forward.

Cameron said :”The WICB has put in place a franchise system that will capture the best players. The next step  is to build our academies within those franchises, but we need government support to make this a reality.”

The WICB’s started the franchise system two years ago and according to Cameron it is already paying off. “Here we have a situation that instead of 15 players retained, we have another 90 at the territorial level who are coming through the franchise system. We are happy to see this development taking place at the franchise level but we need to take it further.”

The WICB has funded the franchise system for the past two years and will be doing it for another year. The money came from the new pay structure given to the senior players, as well as other cut backs. After the initial three years, the franchises will be on their own and they would have to find ways of attracting investors.

Cameron said the franchise system has worked to improving the players and he thinks that 2017, the West Indies will have a Test team of which all  can be proud. “I have said that 2017 is the year when we will have a Test Team to be proud of. I would like to see our best players play in our PCL, play CPL and those who can get a county contract in the United Kingdom so be it, and we have an ‘A’ team tour later this year.

“Our PCL season begins in November and we would be ready to determine those best fit to take us forward. We need to make sure that the players will last and that they are best suited when they are introduced. Think longer term.”

The current PCL season enters its eight round this weekend with matches across the Caribbean.

Warrican returns for Scorpions clash

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - West Indies Test left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican returns from injury as the only change to the Barbados Pride 13-man squad for the eighth round WICB Professional Cricket League first-class match against Jamaica Scorpions at Sabina Park in Kingston, February 26-29.

The 23-year-old Warrican, who has played four Tests since his debut against Sri Lanka last October, missed the last two matches against Windward Islands Volcanoes and title holders and Championship leaders Guyana Jaguars at Kensington Oval because of an injury to his spinning finger following last month's NAGICO Super50 Championship in Trinidad & Tobago.

He replaces uncapped 19-year-old fast bowler Keon Harding.

Chairman of the Barbados selection panel Henderson Wallace indicated a week ago that he expected Warrican to be back in action soon.

"Just remember in professional sport now, it is very unlikely you are going to play injury-free. You always have a niggle of some sorts. Again it comes back to the point that we mentioned earlier that the medical team sometimes have to depend on the honesty and the integrity of the player and make their decision based on medical evidence along with what is coming from the player," Wallace said on Mid Wicket, The Real Cricket Show, on the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation 100.7 FM.

"In the NAGICO, Jomel Warrican was able to play with the discomfort. It didn't appear to affect him too much and then it came to a time now where there was some information and stuff on the finger with the ligaments and we felt that he should give it every possible opportunity to heal properly.

"It's on his spinning finger and as you know these spinners bowl a lot of overs. We felt that if he rushed back there was a likelihood that the whole trauma of trying to grip that ball with that index finger could more or less affect the full recovery.

"And what I said to Jomel Warrican coming from the selection panel.. that you don't have to rush back to prove anything. You want to make sure that you give it the best possible opportunity to recover fully so that when you come back on the pitch you are able to execute and perform to the best of your ability. Not to be performing at 60 or 65 percent because we are not at that desperate stage.

"I said, 'we have resources' so we want that when he comes back on the stage that Jomel Warrican is at his best."

Warrican has 11 Test wickets at an average of 46.27. He bowled 45 overs on his debut and did the brunt of the bowling in the three-Test series against Australia "Down Under", reeling off 77 overs.

Then in the NAGICO Super50, Warrican sent down 45 overs in five matches. Informed sources said at the time, it was felt he should take a rest to have the injury healed properly and he was not chosen for the re-start of the 2015-16 first-class Championship after playing two matches in the first phase.

Warrican's return is likely to result in leg-spinner Hayden Walsh jr being replaced after picking up two wickets for 86 runs off 25 overs in the drawn match against Guyana. It has been the only match of the season for the 23-year-old Antiguan, who became the first non-Barbadian to represent the region's most decorated territory since the PCL was in operation for the 2014-15 season.

With three rounds of matches remaining, the battle for the title is certain to be won by either Guyana Jaguars, who are on 107 points, or Barbados, on 90.

Next in line are Jamaica Scorpions on 60, followed by Trinidad & Tobago Red Force, 56; Windward Islands Volcanoes, 41; and Leeward Islands Hurricanes, 36.

Barbados Pride squad: Kraigg Brathwaite (captain), Shamarh Brooks, Jonathan Carter, Roston Chase, Kyle Corbin, Miguel Cummins, Shane Dowrich, Justin Greaves, Shai Hope, Omar Phillips, Kevin Stoute, Hayden Walsh Jr, Jomel Warrican.

Wendell Coppin (manager), Henderson Springer (head coach), Roderick Estwick (Consultant to fast bowlers), Dr. Jacqueline King (physiotherapist), Alexander Forde (fitness & conditioning consultant), Gary Belle (analyst).

PCL Regional 4-Day Round 8 Bulletin

0

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Leaders Guyana Jaguars and nearest rivals Barbados Pride face inconsistent, but slippery opponents that could derail their title ambitions in the eighth round of the WICB Professional Cricket League Regional 4-Day Tournament, starting tomorrow.

With the final break of the season next weekend, the two teams will be looking to make a huge dip towards the finish line, as they take to the road for this weekend’s round of matches.

The Jaguars, the reigning R4Day champions, stumbled in the previous round, but did not fall and will want to return to winning ways, when they meet Windward Islands Volcanoes at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.

A huge haul of points to overcome the 17-point deficit they now face will be the aim of the Pride, when they tackle Jamaica Scorpions at Sabina Park.

At the same time – Trinidad & Tobago Red Force host Leeward Islands Hurricanes at the National Cricket Centre in a contest between two sides that have shown improvement as the second half of the season has unfolded.

InGros-Islet, St. Lucia: The Jaguars have a chance to put their hands firmly on the Headley/Weekes Trophy for the second straight year against the typically feisty Volcanoes.

The Jags were fortunate to escape from Bridgetown with their double-digit lead still in place, as their contest against the Pride ended in a “draw”.

Conversely, it was unfortunate for the Volcanoes that they left Charlotte Amalie with a similar outcome, after putting the Hurricanes under pressure in the second innings on the final day of their rain-affected contest.

Over the last decade, the Volcanoes have held the upper hand on the Jags, winning five times in 11 matches, but there has been an obvious shift in the balance of power, with the visitors winning on the last three occasions the two teams have met.

The Jaguars have travelled with an unchanged side, but the Volcanoes have made three changes, including bringing West Indies Under-19 World Cup-winning opener Gidron Pope into the fray.

In Kingston, Jamaica: The Pride also have a chance to keep their title hopes on course against the Scorpions, whose stocks have plunged as the season has progressed.

The Pride came close to inflicting the first defeat on the Jaguars for the season, but ran out of steam down the stretch, and had to settle for a draw, at the same time, the Scorpions’ season was dealt a cruel blow when Red Force crushed them by eight wickets.

The outcome will hinge upon how a line-up with three of the season’s top run-getters – Shamarh Brooks, Roston Chase and Shai Hope – negotiate a steady, if not spectacular attack that includes the season’s leading wicket-taker – veteran left-arm spinner Nikita Miller.

Jamaica held an edge in contests between the two sides over the last five years – but the visitors beat them earlier in this season and had the upper hand in the corresponding fixture last season.

In Couva, Trinidad: Both sides had a lot about which to write home after the previous round, but the Red Force grabbed a big win and the Hurricanes had to fight to stave off defeat after on their best batting performances for the season.

This contest has the potential to be the most explosive of the weekend however. Although the Red Force have dominated over the last five years, a five-wicket victory for the Hurricanes in the final round of matches last year in the corresponding fixture will be great motivation.

Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph and batsman Kacey Carty, two players that played a key role in the West Indies Under-19 World Cup-winning squad, have been brought in to reinforce the visitors.

Other Team 0

Bonus points awarded only for performances in the first 110 overs of each team’s first innings only and retained whatever the result of the match.

A maximum of five batting points will be awarded based on runs scored by each team as follows:

200 to 249 runs – 1 point

250 to 299 runs – 2 points

300 to 349 runs – 3 points

350 to 399 runs – 4 points

400 runs or over – 5 points

A maximum of three bowling points will be awarded based on wickets taken by each team as follows:

9 to 10 wickets taken – 3 points

For the avoidance of doubt, “wickets taken” shall relate exclusively to batsmen dismissed under Laws 30 to 39 inclusive and to batsmen retired out.

If penalty runs are awarded to a team which at that time had faced less than 110 overs in their first innings, or completed their first innings before they had faced 110 overs, those penalty runs will be considered as counting towards the total as far as the award of bonus points is concerned.

If penalty runs are awarded to a team which had already faced 110 overs or more in their first innings, or had previously completed their first innings after they had faced 110 overs, those penalty runs will not be considered as counting towards the total as far as the award of bonus points is concerned.

WICB Media Release.

St. John’s, ANTIGUA - Up to January 2016, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) is reporting that at least 20 of its senior players at the first class level, men and women and now three of the winning under 19 team members have benefitted from the relationship with Scotiabank and the Kiddy Cricket Programme.

As both organisations get ready to enter their 16th year of partnership, both organisations are reporting its “positive outlook” for the programme going forward. The Kiddy Cricket programme across the region which focuses on children up to 12 years old, has just about 110,000 children and is “set to expand within the next two years” according to Senior Project Officer, KJ Singh.

Jamaica has increased the number of schools to 224, featuring 84 new schools; while Trinidad and Tobago will be expanding its programme by mid-year. As the WICB plans to grow many of its development programmes which includes the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket programme, the organization has teamed up with UNICEF (UNICEF Jamaica and UNICEF Office of the Eastern Caribbean Area) and a number of national child protection agencies across the region, to aid in the facilitation of child protection training workshops for coaches and PE Teachers.

The Windward Islands has the highest number of schools in the programme with 235 and that include schools in Dominica, Grenada, St Lucia and St Vincent. In total, just under 920 schools are involved in the programme region-wide.

Singh is reporting that there has been steady growth over the last three years and with the banks’ commitment to continue the programme that number should grow by 10 – 15 per cent over the next two years.

“The Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket programme is an important starting point for any young male/female who plans to play cricket and develop a love for the game. While the programme is focused on children developing early cricket skill sets, the leadership and academic elements compliments the overall strategy of what we are trying to achieve, which is developing well rounded children,” adds Singh.

The Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket programme will feature its annual Interval Displays in all three locations in the upcoming One-Day International Tri-Nation series due in Guyana, St. Kitts Nevis and Barbados in June this year.

Greaves 5-for leaves Scorpions in a spin

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Fast bowler Justin Greaves captured his maiden first class five-wicket haul and captain Kraigg Brathwaite followed up with an unbeaten half-century, to put Barbados Pride on top on day one of their eighth round clash with Jamaica Scorpions on Friday.

Opting to bat first at Sabina Park, Scorpions crashed from 135 for three to 177 all out, losing their last seven wickets for 42 runs in a dramatic slide.

Greaves was the chief wrecker with five for 41 while Test left-arm spinner Jomal Warrican supported with two for 43.

Andre McCarthy top-scored with 52, Shacaya Thomas weighed in with exactly 50 but they were the only two batsmen to pass 20.

In reply, Pride finished the day on 103 for three with Brathwaite unbeaten on 66.

He put on 46 for the first wicket with the left-handed Omar Phillips who made 11, before left-arm spinner Nikita Miller intervened to snatch three for 22, and reduce the innings to 71 for three.

Phillips shouldered arms and was bowled in the 11th over of the innings, another left-hander Jonathan Carter was trapped lbw on the backfoot for six while Brooks had his stumps rattled for three.

Brathwaite and Roston Chase, unbeaten on nine at the end, have so far added 32 for the fourth wicket to stabilise the innings.

Right-hander Brathwaite has faced 119 balls in 2-1/2 hours and counted 11 fours.

Earlier, Scorpions wasted a strong position and produced yet another poor batting display.

Pride struck early when fast bowler Miguel Cummins had captain John Campbell caught at third slip by Brooks for four in the morning’s fifth over at 17 for one.

Greaves then grabbed his first when he had fellow Barbadian Kirk Edwards caught and bowled, also for four, at 41 for two.

McCarthy and Thomas combined to prop up the innings in a 52-run stand. McCarthy faced 82 balls in just over 1-3/4 hours at the crease and counted six fours and a six while opener Thomas hammered seven fours and a six off 76 deliveries.

With lunch approaching, Thomas clipped a leg-side catch to wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich off part-time off-spinner Chase, leaving Scorpions on 113 for three at the break.

After the break, McCarthy and Brandon King (19) extended their fourth wicket stand to 42 but once they were separated, the innings declined rapidly.

Campbell - Brathwaite's wicket key

Jamaica Gleaner article.

John Campbell, captain of Jamaica Scorpions, believes the wicket of Barbados Pride opener Kraigg Brathwaite will be key if the Jamaica Scorpions is to make a comeback in their WICB Professional League encounter at Sabina Park.

Brathwaite, the captain of the Pride, at the close was on 66 when his team closed on 103 for three on the first day.

This was in reply to the Scorpions pedestrian first-innings total of 177 after they had won the toss and elected to bat.

"His (Brathwaite's) wicket will be key, and if we can come out and get his wicket, I think their batting will be under some pressure," stated Campbell, who is leading the Scorpions for the second time.

Coming off scores of 117, 30 and 34 since his return from Australia with the West Indies Test team, Brathwaite, in his usual accumulating style, has so far batted for close to two and, half hours and hit 11 fours.

Of note, as well, was his duel with the tournament's leading wicket-taker, left-arm spinner Nikita Miller.

Closing with competitive figures of three for 22 off 14 overs, Miller got the ball to turn considerably, putting Brathwaite and others under pressure at times.

"Miller put in a good spell," conceded Brathwaite, who is eyeing a 16th first class in the process.

"Once the spinners hit in the right areas, it is not easy scoring as the pitch is turning.

"But its' just about trusting my defence and staying positive when I see the ball to score and rotation of the strike.

He continued: "I would like to score a hundred here at Sabina Park. The last couple of times, I scored two 90s.

"I am working towards that, but, at the end of the day, I am looking to build a foundation with my team to get a big score."

With him at the close was the in-form Royston Chase, who has batted for 39 minutes and is nine not out.

Earlier, the Jamaica Scorpions, hoping to break a string of three consecutive defeats, were led to their total by Andre McCarthy, 52, and opener Shacaya Thomas, 50.

McCarthy, entering the fray with Jamaica at 42 for one, batted for one hour and 48 minutes and counted six fours and a six, while Thomas batted for an hour and 34 minutes on his way to hitting his second half century in as many matches.

Former West Indies Under-19 fast bowler Justin Greaves with five for 41, his first five-wicket-haul in his third first-class encounter, was the pick of the bowlers.

New West Indies left-arm spinning recruit Jomel Warrican ended with two for 43.

"We did not get anywhere close to the runs that we wanted," Campbell highlighted.

"But, having said that, the total is already there and is a task for our bowlers to go and defend."

Elvis Howard is new chairman of Barbados youth selectors

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Elvis Howard has been appointed chairman of Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Youth Selection Committee.

The rest of the panel which will be in place until February, 2018, include Hendy Wallace - chairman of the senior selection committee, Jason Haynes, Dexter Toppin and Richard Straker.

Howard and BCA coach Toppin are the surviving members of the last panel which was chaired by Livingstone Coppin.

He has also served on various Youth selection committees over the past 10-15 years, under the chairmanship of Roland Holder, Philo Wallace and Jeff Broomes.

The 42-year-old Howard was a Barbados under-17 team manager in 2008. He was a former president and public relations officer of the Barbados Schools' Cricket Council. He represented Wibix Cricket Club in the Intermediate and Second divisions in the late 1980s as a batsman.

In the 2008 regional youth tournament in Trinidad & Tobago, Howard managed the likes of current West Indies Test and One-Day captain Jason Holder . The side also included fellow Test players Kraigg Brathwaite, Shane Dowrich and Jomel Warrican, as well as current first-class players Mario Rampersaud and Justin Greaves.

Howard has been employed for the past two decades as Laboratory Assistant at the Graydon Sealy Secondary School (formerly Garrison Secondary), where he has been heavily involved in the cricket programme. He has overseen the development of Barbados and West Indies players Tino Best, Dwayne Smith and West Indies Women's player Shaquana Quintyne). During his tenure he has produced players for various Barbados Youth teams.

During a recent press conference at the BCA, Howard outlined the selectors’ visions for the annual WICB three regional youth tournaments (Under-15, 17 & 19) to be held between July and August 2016.

The players will be on show over the next two months, with a series of trial matches starting with this weekend, with 50- over contests in the under-17s on Saturday and Under-15s on Sunday both at Kensington Oval starting at 9: 30 a.m.

“Last year we had a real down season where we didn’t even place high in any of the competitions, so I think the first priority of the selectors is to get three good squads, and already we’ve have put plans in place as we want to win all three competitions,” Howard said.

“I figured that last year one of the problems was that we were very, very short on preparation and the board has seen it fit to give us the machinery from early. The boys were practising in the Centre of Excellence from around September last year and we’re into the second phase of that component.

“So we are happy that we’re having the support of the board in bringing back trial games, which I felt is the best way of gauging where the players are at after a number of practices. Hopefully, we can be happy, if not winning the competition, then coming no lower than second in all three competitions.

“There will be five to six trial matches across the three age groups. The trials will serve two purposes because at the end we will be reducing the numbers in the Centre of Excellence in each group to 25 and those will be ones who will be considered for selection.

"Right now there are very large groups in the COE (45 u-15), (62 u-17) and (63 u-19). We have to get the numbers down to around 25, so we can start to do some remedial work with the likely squad to go off to the youth championships.

"We want the trials to be competitive hence the selectors have put together some balanced sides. The matches will be played under same regulations as to what pertains in the regional tournaments," Howard added.

With all these plans that are in place for this year, Howard was asked how focussed he thinks the boys are? He replied: “Yes they are very focussed. The boys are very keen to get that coveted spot playing for Barbados. I have seen gradual improvements all-round in many of the boys, whom I have come into contact with over the years playing for their various schools.

I think that they are hungry to play for Barbados and even more now with the recent success of the West Indies Under-19 team which contained two of our players in all-rounder Shamar Springer and fast bowler Chemar Holder. To add to that, both these players have one year left in the Under-19 competition and that in itself is a plus for Barbados even before the competition begins.”

Chase, Warrican give Pride the edge

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Roston Chase struck a defiant half-century but left-arm spinner Nikita Miller’s eight-wicket haul limited Barbados Pride to a slender first innings lead on the rain-hit second day of their Regional four-day contest here Saturday.

Resuming from a strong overnight position of 103 for three in response to Jamaica Scorpions’ disappointing 177 all out, Pride could only muster 217 all out with Miller producing brilliant figures of eight for 67.

Captain and opener Kraigg Brathwaite failed to add to his overnight 66 but Chase, unbeaten on nine at the start, took responsibility for the innings with a knock of 53.

Test left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican then grabbed two for ten to leave Scorpions stumbling at 22 for two, when rain half-hour before tea ended play prematurely for the day at Sabina Park.

Heading into the third day of the eighth round encounter, Scorpions still trail by 18 runs with eight second innings wickets intact.

Captain John Campbell was unbeaten on ten and partnered by Andre McCarthy on five.

Warrican, who opened the bowling, removed Shacaya Thomas for five in the third over of the innings to a catch by Brathwaite at slip with the score on six.

In his next over with just four runs added, Warrican claimed Barbadian Kirk Edwards for two, taken by Chase at mid-off.

Earlier, Scorpions had made a key breakthrough in the fourth over of the morning with five runs added when Miller had Brathwaite stumped.

Wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich followed soon after cheaply, lbw to McCarthy (2-17) while Kevin Stoute made 17 before falling lbw to Miller.

Chase then anchored two small but key partnerships to help Pride to first innings lead, putting on 28 for the seventh wicket with Justin Greaves (14) and a further 33 for the ninth wicket with Antiguan import Hayden Walsh Jr, who made 22.

The right-handed Chase struck eight fours in an innings requiring 167 balls in nearly three hours at the crease.

Miller claimed Greaves caught and bowled, trapped Warrican lbw for three with four runs added at 168 for eight before grabbing the prized wicket of Chase, caught at the wicket.

For Miller, it was his second successive five-wicket haul following his seven for 69 against Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in the last round.

He has now taken 23 wickets in his last five innings.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Marc Cyrus' XI defeated Mekhail Marshall's XI by two wickets with as many as 12.4 overs to spare in the first Barbados Under-17 one-day trial match at Kensington Oval today.

Chasing 133 to win in 50 overs, Cyrus' side were under early pressure on nine for three in the fourth over, then recovered through a fourth wicket partnership of 67 in 13 overs between Darnell Evelyn and Shemwyn Harris.

But after Evelyn was run out for 27 off 41 balls including three fours, they slipped to 109 for eight in the 29th over before all-rounder Shemar Persaud and Ajani Batson took them to the target in 37.2 overs.

At that stage Batson was on 13 and Persaud, seven.

It was then decided that the innings be completed and they were bowled out for 188 off the very last ball of the 50th over.

Batson went on to topscore with 36 off 69 deliveries including four boundaries.

Harris contributed 32 from 71 balls, counting two fours.

Zion Hill, who caused the early problems, took two for ten off five overs, while Kevon Connell picked up two for 21 off seven overs.

There were a whopping 48 extras including 29 wides and 12 no-balls.

Marshall's XI were bowled out for 132 in 35.3 overs after winning the toss.

Opener Shaquon Glasgow topscored with 32 off 38 balls, striking six fours.

He added 53 in 10.3 overs for the second wicket with Kevon Connell, who made 28 off 62 deliveries including two boundaries.

Wicket-keeper Tauron Gibson contributed 21 off 48 balls and was part of a sensational collapse during which the last eight wickets tumbled for 40 runs in 13 overs.

Persaud grabbed three for eight and Amari Waithe, three for 19 - both off six overs. Terrll Blanche took two for 25 off 4.3 overs.

It will be the turn of the Under-15s to impress on Sunday, February 28 at the same venue, starting at 9:30 a.m.

Pride hand Scorpions 3rd straight defeat

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Leg-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr and fast bowler Miguel Cummins wrecked Jamaica Scorpions to propel Barbados Pride to an uncomplicated six-wicket victory inside three days here Sunday.

Antiguan Walsh (3-41) and Test left-armer Jomel Warrican (3-49) grabbed three wickets apiece while Cummins picked up two for 20 as Scorpions were bundled out cheaply for 157 in their second innings after resuming the day on 22 for two.

Antiguan Devon Thomas struck an unbeaten 44, tail-ender Jason Dawes got 29 while Brandon King chipped in with 25.

Scorpions were fighting at 73 for three but Walsh and Cummins combined to take five of the last seven wickets which fell for 84 runs.

Set a modest 118 for victory, Pride stumbled en route to their target but were never in real danger, and completed the win about 15 minutes before the scheduled tea break at Sabina Park.

Captain and opener Kraigg Brathwaite top-scored with 36 while Roston Chase gathered an unbeaten 35 and Jonathan Carter, 32.

Leg-spinner Damion Jacobs (2-29) and left-arm spinner Nikita Miller (2-38) ensured Scorpions went down fighting but the hosts never had enough runs on the board.

The victory kept Pride second on 106 points behind leaders Guyana Jaguars who beat Windward Islands Volcanoes, also by six wickets, in their eighth round encounter in Gros Islet.

However, the defeat for Scorpions was their third straight and left their season in crisis. They earned three points from the affair to move to 63 points.

Resuming the day in a shaky position following Warrican’s two-wicket burst the previous evening, Scorpions slipped further into trouble when Andre McCarthy gave the same bowler his third wicket, caught at mid-on off after adding 13 to his overnight five, at 38 for three.

King and captain John Campbell (20) put on 35 for the fourth wicket but once they were separated the innings declined dramatically.

Campbell, unbeaten overnight on ten, spent 63 balls and an hour-an-a-half overall in adding ten runs before he was caught at the wicket off part-time off-spinner Roston Chase.

His dismissal triggered a slide which saw four wickets fall for seven runs in the space of 29 deliveries, as Walsh and Cummins ran through the lower order.

In their run chase, Pride then lost left-handed opener Omar Phillips for eight with the score on 17 for one, caught at slip by McCarthy off Miller, but Brathwaite and Carter allayed any fears of a collapse with a 60-run, second wicket stand.

While Brathwaite faced 60 balls and struck six fours, Carter was the more aggressive with three fours and two sixes off 45 deliveries.

Both fell in successive overs to leave Pride on 79 for three but Chase steered the visitors over the line.
