Barbados Advocate article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - West Indies newly appointed Test Captain Jason Holder took some time out of what is sure to be a busy schedule to share with the young minds and cricketers from the St. Catherine’s Junior recently.

Holder was the guest of Co-operators General Insurance and the feature speaker for the eager cricketers of the St. Philip team and after a brief speech he opened the floor for the aspiring cricketers to ask questions.

Holder first spoke about adequate preparations for the task ahead of a person especially in the game of cricket.

“Hydration is important and adequate sleep,” said Holder who was willing to answer any question posed to him from the audience filled with young cricketers and their parents and coaches.

As he spoke about his journey from Primary School to where he is now in cricket, Holder mentioned that a good support system is also key as one should keep good friends who are willing to tell you the truth no matter what.

He mentioned that scoring the century was one of his biggest achievements as it was not only that he scored the century but he also helped to save the match.

“I pride myself on coming out from tough situations.”

With the aspect of balancing work and cricket coming up as a student, Holder said that good time management was important but his parents helped him in that regards as they also ensure that the first thing he did was his homework as soon as he got home.

That way he had more time to play cricket as the school work was out the way.

“You have got to be discipline and know what has to be done. Plan and plot the way you want to balance... it is not easy but the quicker you get through the work the more time you have to do activities.”

He told those on hand that one of the best pieces of advice he has been given was to be true to himself.

“People think that they are more advance than they actually are and they also tend to shy away from their weaknesses and flaws. If you understand you have them you will work harder."

He said your strength are your greatest assets so work and maintain them but put a little more effort in your weaknesses.

He also said that there was a time and place for everything, when to be serious and when to have fun and one should always treat other with love and respect as you never know who is watching and whose lives who can impact.

Captain Holder lays out ambitious plan

Barbados Advocate article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - West Indies’ captain wants to be the best all-rounder in the world.

Speaking at a presentation and interactive session at Cooperators General Insurance for the St. Catherine’s Junior cricket team, Holder said that “I would like to be the number one all-rounder in the world in the next two years.”

He said that he has been critiqued and he has a plan in order to get where he wants to be.

“I have a process how to get there. I set goals, how many runs and how many wickets.”

Newly appointed to the post of Test captain, and many captains’ own games have suffered, Holder said that when he looks back on his career he has always performed better as a leader.

But his goals are not only personal as he hopes to make a difference in the West Indies team.

“I would say I am mature enough to handle this post and I have a vision where I want to take cricket, but more than personally, it is about getting everyone together.”

“When one looks at the past teams, they looked like a family and this modern cricket team doesn’t look like a family.”

He wants to build a relationship with the players, one with respect and trust. However, he knows that bringing everyone together and getting everyone ‘singing from the same page’ will be his biggest challenge.

Holder who said his love for the game started when he was watching the Ashes in 2005 as well as seeing players such as Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh and Brian Lara playing, said that one thing that he has learnt is to never give up.

Holder mentioned that preparation is key and often times while many cricketers, after maintaining their fitness and preparation at home, when they travel on tours is when they tend to neglect it as they are often tired from games. However, he believes that this is when it is most important to maintain the training regime as players often breakdown on tour because their fitness level falls when one is away from home.

Holder said to the young cricketers that the harder you work outside [the field] then the easier it is on the field.

Landmarks for four batsmen and one bowler as Series 7 in BCA Elite division opens

Barbados Cricket Association article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Four batsmen including two who hit centuries and one bowler achieved significant landmarks on the opening day of Series 7 in the BCA Elite division Championship on Saturday.

Anthony Alleyne of Sagicor Life UWI slammed a career-best 171 against Guardian General Barbados Youth at 3Ws Oval in his first match of the season after playing league cricket in England, and fellow left-hander, opener Shanaldo Taylor hit his first ever century (123) at this level for Massy United Insurance Wildey off CounterPoint Wanderers at the SJPP ground.

Though scoring only 13, opener Rashidi Boucher of relegation-worried Massy Stores Spartan became the second batsman to amass 500 runs for the season as 17 wickets tumbled for 252 runs in their battle with front-runners Brathwaite Construction/Crane Resort St. Catherine at Bayfield.

And yet another opener, BDFSP's Kemar Brathwaite, also joined the 500-run club when he made 90 against ESA Field Pickwick at Foursquare Oval.

It is the fourth time in ten years Boucher has scored 500 runs in a season and the first for Kemar Brathwaite.

Wanderers captain, Kraigg Brathwaite, also an opener, was the first batsman to record 500 runs on the second day of Series 5.

St. Catherine left-arm spinner Derick Bishop, by far the leading wicket-taker, sustained his remarkable form by grabbing eight for 54 as he lifted his tally to 69 - the most he has ever taken in a season. He took 68 in 2005.

At 3Ws Oval:

Anthony Alleyne's second century at this level lifted UWI to 292 for three off 49 overs after rock-bottom Barbados Youth, who won the toss, were bundled out for 59 in 24.2 overs.

Alleyne's 171 took 196 minutes off 148 balls and included 14 fours and ten sixes. He brought up his century in 127 minutes off 104 balls with eight fours and six sixes.

Dominican Kavem Hodge, unbeaten on 96, was set for his second century of the season.

Alleyne and Hodge added 246 for the third wicket.

Pacer Chemar Holder took all three wickets for 43 runs.

Barbados Youth were undermined by a combination of pace and spin. Left-arm spinner Ryan Hinds took four for nought off 3.2 overs, fast bowler Dawayne Sealy, three for seven and medium-pacer Jonathan Carter, two for 27.

At Bank Hall:

Title holders ICBL Empire showed why the return of a couple of their top players from league contracts in England will help ease any lingering relegation worries.

After winning the toss and dismissing mid-table Sierka Rentals Maple for 118 in 40.5 overs, Empire closed on 113 for one off 26 overs.

Two players recently back from England - Roston Chase and Kevin Stoute - made their presence felt. Off-spinner Chase tok three for 17 and was unbeaten on 45 with Andre Roach 60 not out, while medium-pacer Stoute took three for 38.

At SJPP, Pine/Wildey:

Led by Taylor's century, third-placed Wildey amassed the day's highest total of 301 for eight declared off 70.2 overs after they were sent in. Wanderers closed on one without loss.

Taylor's 123 came in 218 minutes off 181 balls with eight fours and four sixes after bringing up his century in 183 minutes off 165 deliveries including six fours and five sixes.

Another left-hander, David Carter, maintained his good form with a knock of 66 off 104 balls with seven boundaries.

Taylor and Carter added 138 at a run-a-minute for the second wicket and Taylor put on 61 for the third wicket with Aaron Jones (48).

Off-spinner Gary Belle took three for 59 and left-arm spinner Chad Clarke-Reifer, three for 92.

At Foursquare Oval:

Despite the disappointment of missing out on a third century for the season, Kemar Brathwaite at least had the satisfaction of passing 500 runs.

Brathwaite's knock of 90 carried his aggregate to 546 as BDFSP fell for a disappointing 179 in 69.4 overs after winning the toss. He batted for 230 minutes, received 189 balls and hit eight boundaries.

Left-arm spinner Raymond Casimir of Dominica took four for 51 and off-spinner Shane Jones, three for 45.

Pickwick will resume on five for one.

At Bayfield:

Left-arm spinner Derick Bishop snatched eight for 54 off 23.5 overs as Spartan were bowled out for 126 in 54.5 overs after losing the toss.

It was the seventh time Bishop took five wickets in an innings this season.

Mikhail Austin topscored with 59 in 125 minutes off 129 balls with seven fours.

Opener Rashidi Boucher took his aggregate for the season to 505 after scoring 13.

Spartan batted without their captain Shamarh Brooks due to the funeral of his maternal grandmother.

St. Catherine also struggled at the crease, reaching 126 for seven in 33 overs. Off-spinner Chaim Holder has four for 32 and left-arm spinner Andre Marshall, two for 35.

Sir Hilary - Region's support critical

By CMC.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – University of the West Indies (UWI) Vice Chancellor, Sir Hilary Beckles, believes it was critical for key institutions like UWI and the West Indies Cricket Board, to respond quickly to the ongoing crisis in Dominica.

The two institutions have collaborated to stage the Dominica Relief celebrity charity game at Kensington Oval here next Saturday, and Sir Hilary said both he and WICB president, Dave Cameron, thought the fund-raising fixture was the right thing to do under the circumstances.

Dominica was last month devastated by the passage of Tropical Storm Erika which killed over 30 people and left over US$200 million infrastructural damage.

“We sat over dinner and we worked through the details and these two institutions – 1928, the WICB and 1948, UWI – came together to do the right thing which is to assist our people in their hour of need,” Sir Hilary told a media conference here Sunday.

“You would have heard from the Prime Minister of Dominica, the Honourable Roosevelt Skerritt and he argued that in his judgement, the development agenda of his country has been set back 20 years. This is a very serious realisation.

“The people of Dominica since their independence have worked very hard and diligently to build a nation. Nation building in the Caribbean is always a fragile process and Dominica have done well.”

The game will be played between the WICB President’s XI and the UWI Vice-Chancellor’s Celebrity XI, and will feature the likes of legendary former batsman, Brian Lara, ex-Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke who is Trinidadian, and newly appointed Test captain Jason Holder.

Sir Hilary urged the Caribbean to give their moral and financial support to the embattled nation as it seeks to recover from the tragedy.

“The devastating to the infrastructure of the country, the devastation to family homes, communities, places of business, schools – all the institutions that constitute a nation – have been severely damaged and have crippled the normal operations of the nation of Dominica,” he said.

“This requires a concerted effort and all of us in the world, who envision to see Dominica back on its feet again, functioning with the normal resilience the people of Dominica displayed over the decades [would support this initiative].”

WICB chief executive, Michael Muirhead, said the partnership between the WICB and UWI on the project was significant in reiterating the importance of regional unity.

“It is not uncommon for West Indians to come together in times of adversity and support one of [their] own, especially when tragedy has befallen them,” Muirhead said.

“Neither it is uncommon for the WICB and the University of the West Indies to collaborate especially where cricket is involved, although this time the focus is different and cricket is the by-product.

“Both the WICB and the UWI are seen as the last bastions of regionalism, representing fiercely independent nations seeking to reinforce their independence across the world but cognisant of the fact that in unity lies strength.”

Proceeds from the game will go towards the Dominica Relief fund.

Sir Curtly for Dominica charity match

WICB Media Release.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – West Indies fast bowling legend Sir Curtly Ambrose is coming out of retirement to turn his arm over in support of a very worthy cause.

The icon, who retired from international cricket 15 years ago with 405 Test wickets and 225 in One-Day Internationals, announced his availability for the “Rally Round Dominica” charity match this Saturday.

He will line-up for the University of the West Indies Vice Chancellor’s Celebrity XI against West Indies Cricket Board President’s Celebrity XI, which begins at 7 pm (6 pm Jamaica Time) at the historic Kensington Oval.

“When I retired from cricket, I said I would never play again – any form of cricket,” said Sir Curtly. “I came back to play a few games here and there and now. Now, I have been asked to represent the UWI Vice Chancellor’s Celebrity XI and I immediately agreed to participate in aid of such a worthy cause.”

Admission for the event – jointly hosted by the WICB and UWI – is US$10 for adults and US$5 for children under the age of 12, with all proceeds going directly to the Dominica Government to assist with recovery efforts in the island which suffered severe damage to property and loss of life from the passage of Tropical Storm Erika, and continued to be affected by heavy rainfall in the recent days.

“I don’t mind sending down an over of two for such as worthy cause,” said Sir Curtly, who celebrated his 52nd birthday on Monday. “I was very touched when I heard the news and then saw what happened on television.

“I knew the storm had passed and then I heard they had a lot of rain, but initially I didn’t realize the devastation. I saw the clippings and it was really a tragedy. We all have to play our part to help rebuild the country, hence the reason why I decided to be part of this fund raising event.

“Generally, I am expecting a very good game and I want to urge all the fans in Barbados to fill the Oval on Saturday night. I also want to encourage those not in Barbados to make donations through other means, so the people of Dominica can get back on their feet as quickly as possible.”

Each side is expected to field half-dozen current players from the West Indies team currently preparing for next month’s Tour of Sri Lanka and a number of celebrity players.

West Indies legend Brian Lara, former Trinidad & Tobago and Manchester United football star Dwight Yorke and Jamaican Olympic medallist Yohan Blake are among the first celebrities to confirm their availability for the match.

New West Indies Women’s captain Stafanie Taylor and teammate Deandra Dottin, as well as UWI Vice Chancellor, Professor Sir Hillary Beckles, are also expected to make appearances during the match.

Drakes wants standardised coaching

TTCB Media Release.

Couva, Trinidad - West Indies Academy Bowling Coach, Vasbert Drakes wants to have standardised coaching throughout the Caribbean.

The former West Indies fast bowler believes standardised coaching will allow players in each territory to be at a certain standard at various junctures throughout their development. Drakes was in Trinidad with West Indies Academy Director, Graeme West to assess the Trinidad and Tobago players short listed for the West Indies Under-19 team.

“Basically we were looking to see where they were at with their game. They just came out of a domestic tournament where we identified these players as future West Indies cricketers and one of the things we said when we left home is to have standardised coaches in the Caribbean who operate with one basic genetic set-up,” said Drakes.

He continued, “The importance of having that is it gives us a better opportunity to understand where we are at as coaches so when we prescribe certain medicine for players at least everyone will be aware of what we are trying to achieve from a holistic point of view.”

He was adamant that a standard coaching protocol throughout the Caribbean would make it easier to evaluate players selected for West Indies Under-19 duty from the different islands.

“It gives us the opportunity to see how far they have progressed. When we assessed them from four weeks ago we would have assessed some in the Easter camp and some did not meet the requirements the selectors wanted to see. So come December there will be another assessment before we go on to Bangladesh. So it is a matter of keep things up to speed in terms of the global practices that is required to play at the highest level and the work they need to put in before they enter the competition. That is one of the areas that probably we were a little bit slow on,” said Drakes.

Gem Stars out for glory in 2015 GAIA T20

Barbados Advocate article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Gem Stars have signalled their intentions to become the first team to ever do the double, when the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) T20 Cricket Tournament bowls off this coming weekend.

After becoming the first community team to win the annual competition since its inception in 2012, the team, which hails from the neighbouring Gemswick, have put down a challenge to all other competitors.

During a press launch of the tournament yesterday at the Grantley Adams International Airport, plans for the 2015 edition were revealed, and Corporate Communications Specialist at GAIA, Keith Goddard, stated that there was one major change made to the format of the competition this year. With next month marking Breast Cancer Awareness month, GAIA Inc. had partnered with the Breast Screening Programme at the Barbados Cancer Society and as such, the competition is to be kicked off with a special celebrity match on the opening night.

Slated for September 27th at the Rices Playing Field, a Celebrity XI will take on the Airport United XI in the only game of the night, following the opening ceremony. Spectators are expected to be treated to a night full of thrills, as the likes of Ian Bradshaw, Admiral Nelson, Tino Best, Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite, Stetson Wiltshire and Ministers Donville Inniss and Michael Lashley, are among the names in the celebrity side.

Speaking during the briefing, Manager of the Breast Screening Programme, Monique Hinds, said that she expected the celebrity match to be a hit, and hoped that the partnership with GAIA and other corporate entities would help to boost awareness.

¡°We¡¯re excited to see the outcome of the cricket match with the celebrity teams... to see them and the community getting involved and coming together to make this happen. As Mr. Goddard would have said, breast cancer is something that has affected so many of us, even if not personally, so many of us know of someone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

¡°And we find that as the awareness spreads, more and more women are coming forward to have their mammograms. More younger women are being diagnosed with breast cancer, and this is due to the fact that more women are taking better interest in their bodies. They know to lookout for the signs, and it is only through raising the awareness with corporate Barbados that we have been really able to put this in the spotlight, so we thank the airport for coming on board,¡± Hinds said.

This year, 14 teams have been divided into two zones, and after the preliminary round, the competition will go straight to semi-finals and finals. Forty-six games are slated to be played from September 29th till the finals on November 28th.

With three teams coming out of the surrounding communities this year, the zones consist Gem Stars; Combined Forces; DHL; Flight Kitchen; Caribbean Aircraft Handling PSA; Drive-A-Matic and Unity in Zone A; and Caribbean Aircraft Handling Ramp; Harlington; Fire Service; Courtesy; Stoute¡¯s Car Rentals; Four Roads and GAIA Inc. in Zone B.

Speaking on behalf of Gem Stars, Shirlon ¡®Jim Brown¡¯ McClean said that his team had been in the competition since its inception and credited it with giving the many talented persons in his community a constructive outlet to display those talents. Noting that it took them three years to win the championship and that they were not looking to let it go any time soon, McClean said that he was in full agreement and support of the partnership.

WICB, UWI urge C¡¯bean to ¡®Rally ¡®Round Dominica¡¯

Barbados Advocate article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - ¡®Rally Round Dominica¡¯ is the call to the Caribbean region to help the island recover from the devastation left behind as a result of the recent passage of Tropical Storm Erika.

The campaign is being led by a partnership between the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and The University of the West Indies (UWI), with the support of several businesses in the regional private sector.

In a media conference held last Sunday, September 20, the WICB and UWI announced a line-up of Caribbean celebrities who will play in a T20 charity match on Saturday, September 26, at Kensington Oval in Barbados, starting at 7 p.m.

The campaign is aimed at raising US one million dollars to help Dominica. While the ¡®WICB-UWI Rally Round Dominica Celebrity T20 Cricket Match¡¯ is the cornerstone of the fund-raising, the drive also includes a live telethon on match-day by Flow Caribbean, a text-donation drive by Digicel and a further

donation initiative to collect clothing and food items, as well as cash deposits.

Tropical Storm Erika descended on Dominica on August 27, 2015, claiming lives, destroying hundreds of homes and leaving behind millions of dollars in damage to the island¡¯s roads, bridges and other infrastructure, including its Douglas¨CCharles Airport. Speaking at the media conference, UWI Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles said: ¡°Sport is a social way in which we can collectively get together and celebrate the resilience of the people of Dominica as we raise funds. We care for them. We are concerned with the circumstances they have to deal with¡¡°This initiative came to us from the President of WICB, Dave Cameron¡These two institutions: The WICB and UWI came together to do the right thing, which is to assist our people in their time of need.¡±

Professor Beckles, who will play in the charity match, will lead a UWI Vice-Chancellor Celebrity XI team against a WICB President¡¯s Celebrity XI. Others signed up to play include West Indies Men¡¯s Team Captain, Jason Holder, West Indies Women¡¯s Team Captain Stafanie Taylor, Former West Indies captain Brian Lara, and former player, Ian Bradshaw, Tobago-born footballer Dwight Yorke, Jamaican Olympian athlete Yohan Blake, along with Caribbean-based international cricketers Dwayne Bravo and Keiron Pollard and Denesh Ramdin. For the West Indies team players, it will be the final home game before departing for their tour of Sri Lanka.

¡°Never before have we needed to lend our collective support,¡± said WICB CEO, Michael Muirhead, during his remarks at the media conference. ¡°It¡¯s not uncommon for West Indians to come together to support one of their own. Neither is it uncommon for the WICB and UWI to collaborate especially where cricket is concerned. In unity lies strength.¡±

Principal of UWI¡¯s Cave Hill Campus, Professor Eudine Barriteau, and Principal of UWI¡¯s Open Campus, Dr Luz Longsworth, also spoke at the media conference and reiterated the sentiment of unity behind the relief efforts.

Prof. Barriteau said: ¡°Our West Indian trait manifests whenever any single member of our regional family is hurting; we all feel the pain. We urge members of the public flying in to join us on Saturday night at Kensington Oval, to wear the prominent Dominica colours of green or yellow or both to show your solidarity with the people of Dominica and to come to the game in large numbers to support this very worthy cause.¡±

Dr. Longsworth said the UWI Open Campus operates a site in Dominica with approximately 400 students pursuing programmes and courses either online or face-to-face. ¡°Since the passage of the storm, our students in Dominica have been challenged to resume their studies,¡± she said. ¡°I can think of no better partnership to bring back light and joy to the people of Dominica than that between The UWI, ¡®a light rising from the west¡¯, and West Indies cricket, which has brought joy to millions of West Indians.¡±

Brathwaite preparing for the challenge

Barbados Advocate article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - The mental edge can be the key factor to take some from good to great.

According to Carlos Brathwaite, who has been selected to West Indies team and was at the traiing camp at the University of the West Indies Cave hill Campus 3Ws Oval, Everyone has a similar skill level. Obviously some guys are ridiculously talented but the core group of players have the same skill level. It is just the ones with the tougher minds that take themselves from good to great.

Brathwaite who said his fitness test went better than expected mentioned that the turning point in his career was when he made the squad against England and despite playing well in warm up games in Australia he did not make the team.

I have to be a little smarter especially in tight situations where the team requires me to bat a longer period but it is a learning process. And with the help of the coaching staff, management and a lot friends, because I see all the guys on the team as my friends, comrades, colleagues that knowledge being branded around [has me] hopeful I learn quicker on the job.

With the tour taking them to Sri Lanka, Brathwaite sees his role as a fast bowling alrounder as one of the hardest jobs on the West Indies team and is willing to take up the challenge. To prepare for this he wants to be fitter than the rest of the other players, so he can be fit enough and strong enough to handle five days of cricket and his body is able to last and give 100 per cent for the West Indies.

Despite wanting to be a genuine alrounder, Brathwaite believes he was selected more so for his bowling at this present time.

I think my fast bowling has got me into the team with the addition of me being able to bat.

However in the future I would like to, even if my bowling isn¡¯t going well, be seen as someone who can play as a batsman and add bowling.

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Recently-appointed captains Jason Holder and Stafanie Taylor have been given the assurance that the West Indies Cricket Board is prepared to offer them professional support services, as they approach the leadership roles in their respective teams.

The offer was made when WICB director of cricket Richard Pybus wrote the two captains following their recent appointments.

“The directors and the management of the WICB recognised that being captain of a West Indies team is a unique challenge and carries an enormous burden of responsibility,” said Pybus.

“We have written and offered them access to whatever support systems they believe is necessary for them to handle their responsibilities in a purposeful manner.”

Holder, the current One-day International captain, had the responsibility of Test captain added to his portfolio, as the team prepares for next month’s Tour of Sri Lanka, where the side will play two Tests, three One-day Internationals and two Twenty20 Internationals.

Taylor, a former ICC Player-of-the-Year, was elevated to captain of the West Indies Women’s team ahead of their International Home Series against Pakistan Women also taking place next month, when they will play four ODIs in St. Lucia and three Twenty20 Internationals in Grenada.

Pybus said Holder has already been benefitting from mentoring from Convenor of Selectors, Clive Lloyd.

“As a legend of the game, a successful international captain and in the role of Convenor of Selectors, Clive is uniquely placed to give valuable insight and we have encouraged Jason to lean on his wisdom, so he can manage the transition to the leadership position,” said Pybus.

Lloyd was a legendary captain that led the West Indies Men in 74 Tests and 84 One-day Internationals during a period of unmatched dominance in the game between 1974 and 1985.

“Clive is also available to Stafanie, but we will also work with her to identify a suitable mentor going forward,” said Pybus.

The WICB has also offered both captains the opportunity to employ an executive coach to assist them with their personal development.

“The WICB is committed to their long-term development and success in their new roles, and we believe this will help Jason and Stafanie to focus while they settle in,” said Pybus.

“We have full confidence that Jason and Stafanie will lead with courage and conviction, and do a wonderful job of moving their respective teams forward, so we have taken steps to help them to plan and manage their time effectively.”

English Cricket Board article.

Hampshire, England - Former West Indies paceman Fidel Edwards has signed a new one-year contract at Hampshire.

The 33-year-old has played an integral role in Hampshire's battle for survival in the LV= County Championship this season, taking 45 wickets at an average of 20.88 in eight Division One matches.

Ten of those scalps came in the clash against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, where Hampshire secured the victory that saved them from the drop as Sussex went down instead.

Hampshire director of cricket Giles White said: “He’s been fantastic for us this year – he’s bowled with a lot of pace and know-how in varying conditions and we’re delighted to have him with us again.

“Fidel has always expressed his enjoyment at playing for Hampshire and he was thankful that we showed faith in him to start with – he adds a different dimension to our bowling attack and this will give the changing room a huge boost going into next season.”
