BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Former batting star Brian Lara stroked a typically elegant unbeaten half-century but the WICB President’s XI still got the better of the UWI Vice-Chancellor’s XI by seven wickets in the Dominica Relief Celebrity charity game here Saturday night.

Opting to bat first at Kensington Oval, the Vice-Chancellor’s XI rallied to 154 for six off their 20 overs, with the left-handed Lara finishing on 63 and Dwayne Bravo, 35.

Off-spinner Stafanie Taylor, the West Indies Women’s captain, snared two for ten while leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo claimed two for 16.

In reply, the big-hitting Kieron Pollard struck a 22-ball 49 and veteran left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul, an unbeaten 46, as the President’s XI coasted to their target with 32 balls remaining.

Ex-West Indies left-arm seamer Ian Bradshaw picked up two for 32.

The game, staged to raise funds for the rebuilding effort in Dominica following the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Erika, was a collaboration between the West Indies Cricket Board and the University of West Indies, and UWI Vice-Chancellor, Sir Hilary Beckles, hailed the effort as a resounding success.

“Dominica won both sides. Heads Dominica won, tails Dominica won. We were doing this for Dominica,” Sir Hilary said.

“Dominica is one of the jewels of the Caribbean. It is one of the most beautiful islands with some great people and what has befallen them, all of us have to rally and we have rallied and I believe the people here represent the core of Caribbean decency.”

Lara, still showing much of the class that made him perhaps the finest batsman of the contemporary era, stroked eight fours and a six off 53 balls as he put on 31 for the first wicket with fellow left-hander Darren Bravo (14).

The former West Indies captain also added 64 for the third wicket with Darren’s older brother, Dwayne Bravo, whose 35 came from 32 balls and included two fours and two sixes.

In reply, the President’s XI lost Garth Garvey in the second over for one with the score on six and though Marlon Samuels stroked a cameo 26 off 11 deliveries with five fours and a six, his side were still 34 for two in the third over.

However, Pollard and Chanderpaul then took charge of the innings, posting an entertaining 70 for the fourth wicket.

The right-handed Pollard crunched two fours and five massive sixes in a typical flurry of savage strokes while Chanderpaul, a left-hander, faced 38 balls and counted two fours and two sixes.

By the time Pollard retired at 132 for three in the 13th over, the President’s XI were well on their way to victory.

The contest also featured the likes of Jamaican sprint star Yohan Blake, ex-Trinidad and Tobago and Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke and legendary former fast bowler, Sir Curtly Ambrose.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – West Indies Twenty20 star Kieron Pollard said it was vital the region’s cricketers came together to support Dominica, following the devastation caused last month by the passage of Tropical Storm Erika.

Pollard was one of several players who turned out for the Dominica Relief Celebrity charity game on Saturday night here, where a WICB President’s XI beat a UWI Vice-Chancellor’s XI by seven wickets at Kensington Oval.

“It was all for a good cause, it was stepping on to the cricket field again for a good cause. The devastation that took place in Dominica, all of us in the Caribbean felt it as well because it could have been anyone of us or anyone of our countries,” said the right-hander who blasted a 22-ball 49 for the President’s XI.

“It was very emotional but at the end of the day we came out and our talent is playing cricket, bringing the fans out and doing something for them so at least we can say we gave back something to them and the families.

"Obviously we can’t take back the loss of lives but the little that we can do, we came out and did it.”

Over 30 people lost their lives during the storm which also resulted in over US$200 million in infrastructural damage. Entire villages were destroyed leaving countless citizens homeless.

Former West Indies captain Sir Richie Richardson praised the efforts to use the match as a means of generating financial support for the rebuilding programme.

“Our hearts reach out to the people in Dominica, they’ve been through a lot and you really have to say well done to all the people in the Caribbean who have really contributed to helping their cause,” said Sir Richie, the current Windies team manager.

“We just hope that a lot of money has been raised and it can go to good use to help them restore their country.”

Jamaican sprint star Yohan Blake was among the celebrities turning out for the game, which also featured the likes of legends Brian Lara and Sir Curtly Ambrose.

Blake, a silver medallist in both the 100 and 200 metres at the London Olympics three years ago said he had been glad to support the initiative.

“I’m a man of giving so when they asked me to come on board and play I said of course. To raise anything for Dominica would be my pleasure.”

All proceeds from the game will go towards the Dominica Relief fund.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Chairman of West Indies selectors Clive Lloyd has responded to recent public statements made by West Indies Team Head Coach, Phil Simmons:

“It was drawn to my attention several things which were said by Head Coach of the West Indies team Phil Simmons recently as he addressed members of the media in Barbados, following the conclusion of the team’s camp, ahead of the Tour of Sri Lanka.

“It must be noted that in the short time that Phil has been involved as Head Coach, he has done a good job in building team unity and morale, and the players have warmed to his coaching methods.

“Phil has apologised to all for his recent public statements and how strongly he would have felt on certain selection matters of the team

“We agreed – at times – that we will have a difference of opinion, but we cannot condone such outbursts.

“Therefore, we will always seek discussion and dialogue at every stage of the selection process and work towards the best interest of West Indies cricket.”

Round of town-hall meetings completed

WICB Media Release.

KINGSTON, Jamaica – West Indies Cricket Board President Whycliffe “Dave” Cameron completed the first round of the series of town-hall meetings in Trinidad last Friday, September 25.

Among the matters discussed were the Professional Cricket League (PCL), which is scheduled to begin its second season in November, the WICB/WIPA partnership, the financial status of the WICB and the new marketing/commercial agreement with Pitch International.

The PCL, the President said, will once again offer fans around the region to see the best players in the region display their skills. With 10 rounds of first-class matches and an expanded NAGICO Super50 Tournament, Cameron said the “region will have a product of which to be proud” in two or three years’ time.

The President also reported that the WICB/WIPA “new way of doing business has reduced legal expenses from a high of US $2.477 million in previous years to a low of just under US $400,000 with the difference being spent on development”

He also noted that private and public companies listed on stock exchanges around the World are required to have completed financial statements within 90 days of the new financial year and was happy to announce that not just was the WICB able to achieve this for the first time, but there is expected to be a surplus of approximately US $2 million.

The President also used the opportunity of the town-hall to announce that Pitch International has been signed to partner to provide marketing expertise.

“Collectively, the partners and senior executives at Pitch International possess an extensive knowledge of the sports rights industry and are proud to work with some of the World’s leading sporting federations, clubs and global stars,” he said.

Other matters brought to the table included women’s cricket development, governance, the resolution of the 2014 India tour which ended prematurely and special membership of the WICB.

The President indicated the number of committees which provide transparency, guidance, good governance and support to the decision making of the Board of Directors namely:

Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee – chaired by Jamaican business executive Don Wehby;

Finance – chaired by Antiguan banker and former Leewards batsman Enoch Lewis;

Marketing and Business Development – chaired by the President;

Governance and Nominations Committee – chaired by Sir Denis Byron, the Chief Justice of the Caribbean Court of Justice;

Disciplinary Panel – chaired by Justice Adrian Saunders, a justice of the CCJ;

Selection Panel – chaired by the legendary Clive Lloyd;

Cricket Committee – chaired by St. Lucian banker and former Windward Islands captain Julian Charles; and

Chief Executives Committee – chaired by WICB CEO Michael Muirhead.

He also reminded the gathering that CARICOM, Association of Tertiary Institutions, Caribbean Chamber of Commerce, Association of Caribbean Mediaworkers, WIPA and West Indies Cricket Umpires Association are special members of the WICB.

Cameron noted that CARICOM has the right to appoint a director, who currently is Ricky Skerritt, the former Minister of Tourism from St. Kitts & Nevis.

The first round of town-hall meetings touched Barbados, Dominica, St. Lucia, Guyana, Jamaica and Antigua.

Focus on High Performance Programme

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – A significant shift has been made to the delivery of the West Indies Cricket Board’s High Performance Programme.

The fine work which the West Indies High Performance Centre – located on the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies in Barbados – and formerly sponsored by regional financial services giant Sagicor – had performed has been widely acknowledged.

The High Performance Programme, administered through the WIHPC, played a crucial role in developing the emerging generation of current West Indies players including new Test captain Jason Holder, opener Kraigg Brathwaite, fellow batsmen Jermaine Blackwood, Rajindra Chandrika, Shai Hope, wicketkeeper/batsman Shane Dowrich, all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite, fast bowler Shannon Gabriel and left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican.

The HPC however, no longer operates under its previous format of registering a cohort of emerging players for a residential programme and working on a year-round basis, following a review of its structure and programme by Director of Cricket Richard Pybus.

With the establishment of six WICB Professional Cricket League franchises, the HPC is now dedicated to providing the finishing touches to elite players that emerge from regional competitions.

“We need to differentiate between the High Performance Centre and High Performance Programme,” said Pybus. “The staff is still based in Barbados, but we no longer have a cohort because we are now looking to the franchises to develop the talent.

“The financial investment is into the establishment of a sustainable professional cricket system in the region, not only as a standalone professional product in the sporting marketplace, but also with the specific goal to produce players for the West Indies.

“It is now the responsibility of the territorial boards in their development programmes and the franchises with first-class cricket to ensure the player pipeline to West Indies teams is well-stocked with international standard players.”

Pybus added however, there are two key steps in the player pathway that he would like to see addressed – the establishment of a second-tier, franchise tournament and a regional academy.

“The tournament will serve a number of playing and development purposes, expanding and accelerating the work the WICB is currently doing of preparing players for the highest levels of the game,” he said.

“The academy would bring in the best elite emerging players to the HPC for three months in the off-season and they be groomed for international cricket.

“Right now, we are seeking sponsorship to operate both programmes in a meaningful way.”

For now, Pybus said, there were greater playing opportunities than previously for elite players in the Caribbean, and the focus was using those tournaments to identify the best players and refine their skills under the new HPP.

“There is now an expanded Regional 4-Day Tournament, we will have an expanded NAGICO Super50 and there is also the Caribbean Premier League,” he said.

To further achieve the vision of becoming No.1 in the game in all formats in the foreseeable future, the Directors of the WICB recently signed off on a HPP Manual to be distributed widely to the territorial boards.

“The HPP now has three key steps: identification, development and management of those players,” said Pybus.

“The document being circulated highlights these three keys, and can be used as a reference guide for best-practice preparation for players to achieve their peak performance and the ultimate goal of making the West Indies team.

“The WICB understands that it’s important that we strive to be a World-leader in the all-round development of our elite players, so research, innovation and consistency with evidence-based practice must be essential to our philosophy and approach going forward.”

The HPP Manual is designed to provide insight into the preparation and management of players within WICB Elite Cricket Programmes from Under-15 right up to teams at senior levels.

It uses the concept of “gears” to illustrate the importance of integrating, identifying and sequencing different factors to produce optimal performance.

“Within the model is the implication that it is necessary to consider all of the various factors that can impact a player’s performance,” said Pybus.

“In an effort to achieve optimal training and performance, each factor needs to be addressed. The WICB HP training model sets the stage for periodization of training. The model ensures that all factors that can influence performance are integrated into an integrated performance plan.”

The methodology identifies, integrates, and sequences nine unique training disciplines:

1. Physical Conditioning

2. Sport Medicine Support

3. Mental Conditioning

4. Leadership

5. Technical Cricket Skills

6. Nutrition

7. Vision Training

8. Life Skills

9. Education

Pybus said all activities of the HPP focus on optimal short, medium and long-term athletic preparation. He noted that this training methodology focusses on the process (training and performing to one’s actual best capacity) rather than on the outcome (winning).

“Our methodology is athlete-centered and coach-driven, ensuring that athletic training is both cricket-specific and tailored to individual needs,” he said.

“Players will undergo regular evaluations of all aspects of their high-performance training and development.”

Runs to be had despite turning pitches, says Brathwaite

By CMC.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – Opener Kraigg Brathwaite believes the spin-friendly pitches here will prove more of an opportunity than a challenge, when the Test series bowls off next week.

The 22-year-old top-scored with 46 in West Indies’ 126 for seven on Friday as the Caribbean side’s batting struggled on the opening day of the three-day tour match against the Sri Lanka Cricket Board President’s XI.

And with West Indies bracing for a barrage of spin on slow, turning tracks, Brathwaite said batsmen could be successful once they remained disciplined.

“The pitches are quite [good] although they may turn,” said the right-hander, who has already registered four Tests hundreds including a double in a relatively short 22-Test career.

“They’re quite good for batting so it’s just about assessing the pitch as early as possible and knowing which shots to play and which shots not to play and the bottom line is to enjoy it.

“Obviously I will be looking to get some big scores. My main thing is to build that foundation for the team as the opener, getting through that new ball and once I back myself and bat deep, I will get big scores down here.”

As expected, spin was a factor on the rain-hit opening day of the tour match where only 46 overs were possible, with off-spinner Suraj Randiv picking up three of the wickets to tumble.

Opting to bat first, the Windies were cruising at 78 for one on the back of a 55-run, second wicket stand between Brathwaite and left-hander Darren Bravo, who made 21.

However, once Bravo fell in the first over after tea, West Indies lost five wickets for 35 runs to collapse to 113 for six in the final session.

Brathwaite, who faced 102 deliveries and counted six fours, said his aim was to spend time at the crease and get acclimatized to the conditions.

“It (pitch) was a bit difficult. It was on the slow side and outside was overcast so the bowlers were getting the ball to move about a bit but I was up for the challenge,” Brathwaite explained.

“Myself and (Rajindra) Chandrika worked hard for the first hour and it is just unlucky that we didn’t go on and get a bigger score.”

He added: “Playing on these pitches you have to always get accustomed. Usually my game is around the first hour, getting through that and fighting. It is about building an innings so that’s what I look to do, whether it is a practice game or a Test, that’s what I’m going to do.”

West Indies have never won a Test match on Sri Lankan soil, a record they will be hoping to correct in the two-Test series.

And Brathwaite said he would be looking to play his part, and was working hard in preparation.

“Thus far, preparations have gone quite well. I had a few net sessions. The [tour] game was put back [by a day] but today I had good time in the middle,” he said.

“Preparation is going good. I’m working hard, facing the bowlers in the nets. I’ve been facing a good set of spin because you know you will probably get a lot of spin in the Test match. I’m enjoying the pitches.”
